The Foo Fighters!
« on: Aug 30, 2008, 02:15:40 AM »
Just got back from a concert!  Front row mothafuckers!  Dave Grohl was looking straight at me fro about 5 seconds, which is an eternity in concert glances.  I know he was looking at me because I was right in the front.  Here's some teaser pictures with more in the album.  I know some are blurry, but it's hard to stay still when there's a fucking rock show in front of you, and drunk Harley motorcycle people are spilling BEER IN YOUR HAIR!

Here's the photo album

Since the HIV denial shit is off of their site, I can listen guilt free.

I'm a fan, through and through.

I want to get to Foo show before they break up. Dave is a master. I loved him as the Devil in the Tenacious D movie.

Well, obviously it's not meant to be taken literally; it refers to any manufacturers of dairy products.

I think every band breaks up eventually. Maybe they won't. They've been around a while and I haven't been to a show and its something I fret about.

I've got to say, I generally dislike the Foo Fighters. It's just incredibly mediocre, generic rock music, IMHO. That being said, last time they came to town I was up to bat to review the show. Now I've been to a concert or two in my few years writing music, and I gotta say, Dave Grohl is an ace live. The band was one of the tightest, most entertaining acts I've ever seen. The sound guy was on the ball (usually what makes or breaks a concert), the visuals were great, and Grohl was very charismatic. That and I'm a sucker for spectacle, and there was a point were another stage dropped down on the other side of the stadium, which was such a great idea.

They own the stage, I love their stage presence.

I know it's subjective and all, but how is FF music generic? I'm really picky about music (I think) and as most stuff from that era has fallen away don't you think they've done a pretty good job keeping the same sound but still being a great band? I have to admit that the latest albums aren't as good as the early ones, but there are always a couple songs that I just adore on each album.

So if you don't really like the Foo, what do you like, in a comparable genre?

First off, I never said the Foo Fighters were a bad band. On the contrary. I find their singles quite refreshing in modern rock music which seems to be filled with Theory of a Nickle clones or shitty, angsty one hit wonders who are barely able to crank out a decent single let alone a competent album.

That being said I just don't feel their output as a whole is on par with their singles. My Hero, Learn to Fly and Monkey Wrench were perfect pop-rock songs. Catchy, sick hooks, well produced - all things essential to a good pop tune. Unfortunately their albums as a whole are quite formulaic. You can still keep a cohesive sound but still experiment a little, I think that is what separates a good band from a great one. That or the ability to crank out pure catch honey, which I don't think Grohl has the ability to do (especially after listening to the last album which I honestly can't even remember a single song off of the top of my head despite the fact that I had to listen to it through probably 15 or 20 times for work.)

As for pop-rock band I like? I think Sam Roberts has done a damn good job at keeping a cohesive sound while still writing insanely catchy tunes that explore and evolve. The White Stripes have been able to do this too.

But you're right, music is extremely subjective, and I probably don't think we'll ever agree on this. I've had this exact same conversation many times before, and I do understand why people like the Foo Fighters so much.

I like how they can do acoustic versions of their songs and still keep a lot of the meaning in the lyrics.  They did My Hero acoustic. It was just Dave, a guitar, and a stool.
