The Guardian has published a list of the 50 best podcasts of 2016, loads I haven't heard of before (and lots of other suggestions in the comments). I'll be taking a look when I get a bit more time

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2016/dec/21/the-50-best-podcasts-of-2016

Thanks for that.  6 or more of my podcast subscriptions are news shows, and it's getting depressing.
Amend and resubmit.

Recently got into paranormal casts.
Listened to quite a bit of "The Paranormal Podcast" with Jim Herald.
I can go into all the things I think about it if anyone cares, but the bottom line is that I can listen to it good naturedly and be genuinely... maybe not fascinated, but charmed? by the conversations.

Then I tried "Mysterious Radio", namely the first full episode featuring guest Mark Sargent, and I could not listen to it good-naturedly.
It was just every kind of grating, on the verge of being infuriating.

Need some suggestions at this point. I'm a voracious podcast listener. On top of my subscriptions I'm usually also going though a back catalog.
Now, I'm out. Need suggestions for good shows with a nice catalog to catch up with.
Go!

Two podcasts- both semi fictional docudramas with strong links to real events. Sort of. Both by Pacific Northwest Stories (who are sort of semi fictional too)

The Black Tapes is an investigation into the mysterious eponymous Black Tapes. These are the paranormal events that skeptic paranormal investigator Richard Strand was unable to debunk. He is loosely based on Randi. Very loosely.

Tanis is as Tanis does. It is fun and weird. What is Tanis? Listen for yourself.
Only issue I have is when I realized the character on the Black Tapes is supposed to be an expy of Randi. Made  some bits more grating.

I'm working my way backwards.  I liked the Kasparov and the McKibben ones.

They're all really good. Just read the topic for the episode and check it out if it interests you. Be aware he started back in march when trump wasn't going to win the nomination so there might be topical stuff that even though less than a year old is dated in retrospect.

There are a couple episodes that have second city skits that are great (and one or two that are awful) and John DiDominco does the best Trump impersonation. Actually the interview where John explains how he learned to impersonate Trump is a good one.

Then you get to listen to Jacob slowly regain his faith in humanity and sense of the world.. should be an interesting journey

I'm back into the Sydney Opera House "Dangerous Ideas" lectures.  Alok  Jha and Tim Flannery, for one and currently listening to PJ O'Rourke.

Those Aussies do great public broadcasting.

If you like caustic soda with slightly darker humor, I recommend "Last Podcast on the Left".

They pretty much do the same shtick. Taking about horrible things with disarming humor, except they tend to dive a bit deeper than caustic soda did.

Yeah, I recommend it as a CS replacement. It was actually you who turned me to it. They're a lot funnier and have great chemistry too.

Darker than Caustic Soda? Is this like Vantablack humour?

Cool! I want a ninja suit composed of that. I'll get really hot though.

But yeah, vantablack humor seems appropriate. Their 911 episode got a lot of people really uncomfortable.

The Rubin Report, episode 63. Interview with the Greek politician Yanis Varoufakis who was finance minister at the peak of the Greek bailout a few years ago. Well worth a listen for anyone interested in the deeper underlying causes of the Eurozone crisis (and what might trigger another one sometime in the future).

Worth noting, not due to their humor. Just the content. They were remarkably respectful.
