SQ the ΣΛ/IGMд:
I just caught an episode of this the other day.
It was really entertaining.
Scientists say in 14 billion years the earth will be surrounded by dwarf stars that have expelled all their energy, including the sun.
What are we gonna do then?
  :-[

Hanes:
Probably die.

Heat death is probably inevitable.  It's all about, for me, learning as much as we can, and having as much fun possible doing it before the end.  That goes for the species and individuals.

Sometimes it gets me down, but who knows, in 10 billion years we may find out how to reverse enthalpy, or use some quantum function to create matter/antimatter, except move the antimatter into storage for latter use, then use the matter to form new stars with huge, light year wide, gravatationally linked machines.  Probably not, but who f'ing knows?  A thousand years ago, we didn't know the sun was going to kill us all in 5 billion years.

Besides which, we will continue to evolve.  In a hundred thousand years, we may be as different from us (now), as we (now) are from chimps.  Who knows what we'll be able to figure out then.

The key is, as always, to survive.  We'll never survive the red giant stage of Sol if we don't survive the next hundred years.  Baby steps! ;D

Thespis:
These episodes of Astronomy Cast should cheer you up:

The End of the Universe part 1: The End of the Solar System

The End of the Universe part 2: The End of Everything

 ;D

MikeSmith:
Our descendants will be gods.  And their ancestors will be our technology.

The kids will figure it out.

Ampatent:
Guys, no worries.... we'll have the 20th edition of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by then! I'm hedging my bets on faster than light travel being discovered sometime in the next millennium.
