Beliefs. Where do they come from?

--- Quote from: NiroZ on Mar 21, 2009, 05:45:22 PM ---Interesting. I would have thought a sceptic would avoid circular reasoning.

Yes, we do. Perhaps you meant to ask a different question than the one you asked.
Perhaps you meant to ask "Why did you believe that those past events reliable at the time they happened?", at which point I would ask you to re-read reply #15.
I am still awaiting an example of a justified belief that does not come from facts, by the way.
NiroZ:
I thought I already disputed that.
Perhaps you could define fact?
Evil Eye:
A fact is something that is true, whether we perceive it as true or not.
Facts do not have to be true. They can also be false. They are nevertheless facts.
And True (and false) are independent of our perceptions.
Beauty is a perfect example.
My perception of Angelina Jolie is that she is beautiful.
Whether anyone agrees with me or not is irrelevant. The fact is that she is whatever she is, and I perceive her as beautiful.
Why do I have this belief?
Because I perceive her as beautiful.
This is not making a true or false statement. This is making an opinion.

No, you ignored it.

You can use the everyday definition of the word.

(emphasis mine)
Please do make up your mind.

Opinions are not facts.
"Angelina Jolie is beautiful" is an opinion.
However, "Evil Eye says that he thinks that Angelina Jolie is beautiful" is, indeed, a fact.
Evil Eye:
I was wandering early when I replied.
Truth is just as much a fact as falsity in that it can be checked.
Belief cannot be a fact (edit: on it's own). But Facts can be believed.
