Islamic group calls video game offensive

CAIRO (AP) — An influential Islamic group has demanded the removal of an online video game depicting religious figures such as the Prophet Muhammad and Jesus Christ fighting each other, saying it is offensive to Muslims and Christians.

The Saudi-based Organization of the Islamic Conference, which represents most Muslim nations, called the game "incendiary in its content" and said Tuesday its makers should take it off the Internet.

Players of the game can fight each other with Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, God and the Hindu god Ganesh.

The Italy-based Molleindustria, which made the game, posted a message on their Web site Monday saying the game has been around for more than an a year and no religious organization had complained about it previously.

And, here's the company's response (after they caved and pulled the game):

Faith Fighter was meant to be a game against intolerance that used over the top irony and a cartoonish style to express the instrumental use of religions.

Faith Fighter depicted in a mildly politically incorrect way all the major religions as a response to the one-way islamophobic satire of the Danish Mohammad cartoons.

If an established organization didn't understand the irony and the message of the game and is claiming it is inciting intolerance, we simply failed.

We suspect that people at OIC never played the game and only referred to the article on Metro UK that successfully manufactured this controversy.

I can only quote Stephen Fry: "It's now very common to hear people say, "I'm rather offended by that", as if that gives them certain rights. It's no more than a whine.
It has no meaning, it has no purpose, it has no reason to be respected as a phrase.
"I'm offended by that." Well, so fucking what?'"

Amen, brother!

I mean, if you're offended, you have every right to protest, boycott, etc.  But, I have every right to ignore your protest (or, more likely, hear that some religious group is boycotting and then be encouraged to go out and buy the product!)
