On early editions of the SGU, evidence that there has been no genetic exchange between Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal as taken as evidence that there had been no sex between the two species - but isn't this incorrect? We could similarly infer from doing genetic analysis on horses and donkeys that mules don't exist and that any who appear in the neighborhood are merely hallucinations...

Interspecies sex happens all the time. If there were fertile offspring produced from these separate groups (whether you want to call them "species"), we wouldn't call them separate species. The same would be true if found evidence of genomes converging with donkeys and horses.

What's important to note is that Cro-Magnon and Neanderthals were biologically pretty similar AFAIK. So a lack of genome convergence not only suggests a lack of ability to interbreed, it suggests that they never really tried.

I'm pretty sure they interbred, but in such small volumes that no offspring made it more than a generation.

Thock raised his club to strike, but realized he wasn't sneaking up on just any other primate, but on a female of the short, squat species that often copulated with his kind, but never burdened one with young. It had been weeks since Thock had mated, and his desires had been growing. Nights alone were wearing on him sine he'd been separated from his tribe.
