Darrel W. Ray (Ed.D. and psychologist) has written "The God Virus: How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture" in which he makes an analogy between religion and a biological virus. http://www.amazon.com/God-Virus-religion-infects-culture/dp/0970950519
To me, this seems like an unfairly negative false analogy in that there is nearly nobody who would find anything positive or redeeming about a virus. Even if, on balance, you find religion to have a negative influence, it is hard to claim that religion is responsible for no good at all.
So I would be curious to hear Steve and the gang interview Darrel to see how far his analogy really works -- and works in a way which sheds new light onto the nature of religion.
Or, is this just a clever sounding idea, but when you get into the details do you have to "squint" in order for it to seem like the analogy still holds?
