We can't turn the one into coins:  think of the strippers!  Think of the strippers!

Same argument was made in Canada before the introduction of the $1 coin (the "Loonie"), but the strippers adapted.  Now, rather than sticking a dollar bill in a  g-string, the patrons are encouraged to engage in a little low velocity "target practice".....or so I have been told......  :P

Yeah, knock the tassle off or something.

Tassles?  more like sink the little man in the boat. ;D

Either my slang is way off, or Canadians are encouraged to have sex with strippers in lieu of giving them paper money.

I feel sad that this tread, which started off with beautiful currency designs, is now about coin operated strippers in Canada.

Or it goes from robots to strippers. We're hitting all the geek markers.

And I feel bad for helping derail it....so, to put it bak on track I'll just say that I hated the idea of replacing the $1 and $2 (CDN) with coins, when they were proposed, but its really been no big deal.  In fact, I find that I tend to save more of my pocket money now as once my pocket gets a bit heavy I tend to throw the excess change into a jar in my office.

I am from Detroit, and often took trips to Ontario.  If I remember correctly, didn't the Canadian govt just sort of mandate that the change from $1 bills to coins was happening on X-day?

I only ask because the US seems to be developing different $1 coins and hoping one catches on without forcing anyone to do anything......I think they need to just rip the band-aid off and mandate a final day for the $1 bill....

Yeah, that's my recollection too.  There was a date set and the coins went into circulation.  As the banks received the dollar bills back they took them out of circulation until there were only coins left.

I agree with the band aid analogy....in my opinion if the Canadian government hadn't taken the paper currency out of circulation the coins would never have caught on, especially among the older generations.

Our one and two dollar coins are a gold colour but different sizes, the one is smaller than the two.  Many little events call for a gold coin donation... you can choose. It works.  I quite like the coin thing.  The paper currency was invalid on x day and the one, two and five cent coins were phased out over quite a long time.  Shame about the one cent pieces... they were exactly the same size and weight as a US dime.  I seem to remember buying the local paper whilst visiting the states for two cents (am I dating myself here?).

That totally works here in Germany too.  At grocery stores, shopping carts require a 1 euro coin to be inserted in a slot by the cart "handle" to let the wheels roll and move around.  When you return your cart to the rack from which you got it, your 1 euro coin pops out and you go on your way.  It encourages people to not leave carts everywhere.  The same system is used for luggage carts at the airport.  For whatever reason, the US quarter works in all of the slots that you are supposed to insert a euro coin.   I haven't used them in a newspaper machine or a candy/soda machine yet.....I really should try....

There is a story about a certain kiwi mountain guide caught using nz one cent pieces in slot machines in Las Vegas circa 1980 and finding out that the people that run those slot macihines are not the nicest people on the planet...

I'll say I like the dollar coin. It has a nice feel. It has utility. But the two dollar coin just pisses me off. They were even thinking of coming out with a $5 coin. I wish Canada would get some true balls and come out with plastic bills like Australia. The money lasts long + people like "paper" money.

Our treasury claims that the coins are in the long run cheaper (therefore "better") than the plastic notes (with clever little holograms and windows!) they replace.  Those coins are bloody good in parking meters, but I fear we will need larger denominations soon to feed the pricks.

My anecdotal story:

Over the last few years, I have avoided spending change. I'll break a bill, or use debit, and any change I collect throughout the day goes into a jar, and eventually I'll cash it in.

Since April of last year, I have saved over $2000 this way. Two vacations later, I've decided it's a good little savings plan that I never really notice.

Coin op shopping carts have been around for ages. I remember them at....I think it was BJs Wholesale Club? Dunno what ever happened to the idea...kinda faded away.
