In regards to the suggestion of a shallow pool/newcomers forum, it has been tried before.  What happens is the n00bz don't want to venture out of it, this whole newcomers culture sort of forms, and oldtimers get pissed, because they can't rape and pillage as they wish there.

Plus, the level of moderation and rules is such it requires actual time and energy from anyone foolish enough to volunteer to Mod it, and the whole thing goes south quick.

Because in essence you are creating another forum.

However, there are other forums that have "safe" topics, in which any and all insults, criticizing or mocking is strictly forbidden, in the topic, so people can open up about sensitive matters without suffering a 4chan style surprise.

Again, these topics become wildly popular, because they are safe, and sometimes resemble an entire forum, in a single topic.

Would it be possible to get each forum topic in RSS Style so when I am on the go I can keep up to date? If not that would be my suggestion

Have you tried the RSS option at the very bottom of the page?

I did and it seems to be an rss feed for all new posts. I was looking for RSS feeds on a per forum basis (such as one for "General Discussions or Sketpic and Science section)

Call me crazy but insulting each other is against the rules. My arguments are up for grabs, my beliefs are ripe for the picking. Test me challenge me, but insulting me is juvenile. (waits for examples of when he threw out insults) Thing is that I know it's wrong. That is part of the culture IMO.

I don't know about RSS feed, but you can change it so that you can get notified of interesting topics. It's somewhere in Profile I think. Let me check.

"Profile">"Modify Profile">"Notifications" - it's not RSS, it's email, though. Not exactly what you're looking for, I know, but the best I could think of at the moment.

fwiw, I'm using Firefox and there seems to be an RSS feed button in the address bar that would allow me to subscribe to this page. I'm going to experiment with that and see what happens. I'll let you know if anything interesting happens.

ok, nevermind, it just subscribes to the entire site.

but good news everyone, now I can keep an eye on y'all through google reader >:D

Two suggestions:

1) This may have been suggested/implemented/removed before, but a kind of "thank you" button , where, for example, User A makes a post, User B thinks that post is groovy and clicks the "thank you" button, and then a small notice appears on the post showing who thanked it. Counters on user profiles for how many times they've thanked/been thanked are optional, but I think that just the marker on the post is enough. Basically, a way for users to send a virtual high-five to those that make posts worthy of such congratulatory actions.

2) Is there a way to make is so that users can "soft post" in a thread? I've been listening through the old podcasts, and I'm on #170 right now. Once in a while, I read the forum thread on an episode and feel like chiming in, but I feel like bumping the entire thread just so that I can make my punny joke is only gonna clutter the forum and piss off the regulars. Perhaps a way to post without bumping the thread would be nice, so that buried threads can remain buried until a worthy bump-post gets made.

I realize that both of these are rather minor technical updates for which the proper software hacks may not even exist, but I figured I'd throw my opinion out there so that others can weigh in on it, ignore it, or send letters full of white powder to my home.

Number one sounds awfully like the 'karma' thing we had a couple of years back and no, that won't be making a return anytime soon. If you're really interested in why, do a search.

Yeah, Karma won't be making a return.  I know what Dog Delusion means by the "thank you" feature, though. VBulletin has it, and it is indeed kind of cool.

But not bumping a thread you post in?  Why would you post something that you know no one would ever read?

I can see how this could allow trolls to take an extinct thread, and start saying things behind people's backs.
