I don't understand. If they are used in an improper manner, can't they just be.....moderated?
I recently had too many curse words in my signature. They didn't remove all signatures, they just let me know nicely to fucking stop it. Why are smiles different?

we like to nip things in the bud around here. we do understand that y'all are adults, but temptation and all that. if you want, you can PM Beleth for a full explanation; he'd be happy enough to let you know. (i suggest PMing because the topic has been brought up in enough threads :P)
