R. Crumb Draws Illustrated Bible; Church Leaders Furious
« on: October 17, 2009, 11:16:57 PM »
Oh man...it's just TOO good! Apparently R. Crumb has undertaken a comic book version of the bible, with nothing left to the imagination. The result is some rather explicit imagery of real bible stories. The result has angered a few church leaders, who condemn the book as lurid. Here's a full article:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/booknews/6358134/Biblical-sex-row-over-explicit-illustrated-Book-of-Genesis.html

Quote
[Crumb] has said he does not believe that the Bible is the word of God. "I take it all for myth from start to finish, with probably some faint relation to historical reality." he said. "They're great stories. But for people to take texts as something sacred, handed down from God... that's pretty backward, I think."

For those of you that don't want to read the article....here's the payoff:

The LA Times actually reviewed it:

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-ca-r-crumb11-2009oct11,0,6955001.story

Quote
...
This is rough stuff, full of lust and jealousy, in which Jacob steals his brother's birthright, and later, his sons kill a town full of men to avenge the defiling of their sister, Dinah. God is here, but he is mercurial, pitiless, willing to wipe out creation with a flood to purge the world of wickedness, yet somehow powerless to stop wickedness from reemerging once the Earth repopulates. Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham's near-sacrifice of Isaac, even Jacob wrestling with the angel: The point of these episodes is awe, in the most terrifying sense of the word -- awe at a universe that defies our reason and in which we must continually make adjustments to survive.

That is brilliant.

Reminds me of my Children's NIV which ended up completely graffitied(sp?) with willies and boobs. It was a dark day in the Soodal household when my Dad found that, I can tell you.

What is the likelihood that if I requested the local library buy it, they actually would?

Many libraries in the U.S. and Canada already have it.

To tell the truth, they tend to ignore the nasty bits.

I'm glad to see comics are still pissing people off.  There's just a woeful amount of attention being paid to the medium until a movie comes around taken from a major Marvel/DC IP.  Hell, most indies that go big screen adaption rarely get the credit they deserve.  The subject matter and themes of your average comic are far more riskier than just about anything on TV or film.  If anyone's ever read Bendis and Oeming's Powers, just think about that one superheroine whose powers exist simply because she believes herself to be God.

I'm still flabbergasted Preacher has yet to fire up the masses of holy rollers.  there's hope yet if they can ever get it up to the big screen and keep the blasphemy in all its glory

Pity it's only Genesis so far. I wonder if one life is long enough for him to finish all of it.
