Skeptical cartoon for the Internet
« on: August 22, 2009, 06:32:03 AM »
Something that I has been doing for some time now is making cartoons on flash and over the last 6 or so years of doing it i have become quite proficient at it.

Though SGU I have been introduced into the world of skepticism and when I started to think of things that I could do to help with the awareness of pseudoscience and other such nonsense I thought I might as well stick with my strengths and make a short series of cartoons to publish on youtube.com and other video streaming websites.

I was just wondering if anyone here had any ideas or advice to what subjects I should talk about and what tone i should take. I was thinking a satirical comedic point of view but also educational.

I'd go with something like South Park, but you may want to use less fart jokes.

I have done a little bit of work on this and I have started the animation in flash here are three screen shots from the cartoon so far (the first episode is about U.F.O's)

however thats not the only reason i am making this post, i would like the help of the people on this forum because i am in the middle of drawing the character that represents pseudoscience.

I have a basic draft so far with no colour (or hands and feet for that matter) however i need ideas for elements i should put on the character to make him the epitome of a quack. maybe ideas like a 9/11 'truther' t-shirt or something of that nature, subtle clues that show he is a true believer.

Also i left off the feet because i have no idea what style of shoes i should draw or if i should go with bare feet and i left off the hands because they are just so hard to draw! hahaa here is what i have so far.

Okay, call me sexist if you must, but I think that the "pseudoscience believer" archetype would best be captured by an image of a female.  That guy you've drawn has too much of a "startled pizza maker" and not enough of a "homeopathic palm-reader" vibe to him.

He needs a white lab coat and stethoscope. And a name tag that just says "Doctor."

Actually, I think the problem is that there isn't one stereotype. You have the granola-munching hippie energy types, the patriotic republican god-is-on-our-side types, the feminist pagan politically correct types, the lives-with-his-mother conspiracy theorist types, etc. There's so much woo you can't boil it down to just one type.

And then there's the sincerely stupid (Deepak Chopra) vs. maliciously evil (Kevin Trudeau) types.

The character you've drawn looks to me most like the conspiracy theorist. He'd have something on his shirt about "The Truth Is Out There," or "C'mon Sheeple, Open Your Eyes!" or something of that nature.

well that will work well with the UFO theme of the first episode, and if i do make more i can just draw a new character that sums up each different type of pseudoscience.

i am starting to think that this character will be the  'the lives-with-his-mother conspiracy theorist' as you put it.

This is the basic colouring of the whole character minus his shoes. all i need to do is add something onto his t-shirt.
