I have quite the list of podcasts, and am aware of only a few with no commercials.  These are Joystiq and Gamespot--both affiliated with very commercial websites.  Engadget also used to have no commercials until a little bit ago.  I've never heard a commercial on SGU, and would like it if it stayed that way.  Same goes for this forum.

Unfortunately we have outgrown our ability to not use advertising as a way to fund the SGU.   Last year we tested an Audible ad and mostly got a good response.  We held off for 6 years but now over the next few months I will be adding ads on the website and in the podcast.

Just out of curiosity ... how much would an ad cost?

What's wrong Jay, are the big pharma cheques not big enough for you? You tool.
Perhaps you should enroll your brother into a baby eating contest, I'm sure he'll win.

I was just thinking about this the other day... almost every podcast I listen to that uses ads is sponsored by GoToMeeting or Audible or both. Does no one else sponsor podcasts?!

That gave me a chuckle.

Jay, I hope you guys get to work out something decent for the ads.  I think the best case would be sponsors that you believe in, and where maybe one of you guys read the copy.  That's opposed to the canned commercials you hear in all kinds of podcasts.

But, of course, you do what you can with what you have.  I'll keep listening either way.

How ads are paid out can vary widely depending on many factors but its usually determined by how many impressions the ad gets.  On a website you get a certain dollar amount her 1000 page impressions.   Those dollars amounts can be anywhere from .25 - $40 and up.

The Distorted view podcast has done well with the promo code promotion from the Adam & Eve adult novelties site. But then, DV has a bit called "Sextastic Tuesday," so they may be a bit better a fit for the demographic than SGU.

In all seriousness, I wonder if a personal sponsor/dedication per episode would work, maybe in addition to the regular Audible ads.

I'm fine with ads, but FWIW, I prefer when they're pre recorded by someone not on the podcast - it can be jarring to hear the hosts switch from 'banter' to 'scripted sales pitch'.
