Sort of takes the fun out of it.
« on: December 20, 2009, 03:49:51 PM »
When people (especially those over 1000 posts) don't have an avatar, that is.

Can we set it up where people over 500 or so posts who don't have avatars get a request to pick one? And every 500th post after that? Don't do it for those who have had avatars already, and don't anymore. Just those that never got one.

Or maybe make default smiley-avatars which change depending on the number of posts someone has?

Also, can we set it up where people over 5000 posts get their own smiley? I just think it would be a nice thing to do.

I find that avatars help me more easily remember people too, IaN, but to force (or even nag) people to use an avatar is far more dictatorial than I'd ever want to be.

There are some on this forum who turn off even displaying avatars.  (sigs, too.)

No, I mean to send a small suggestion every 500th post. Not really too unpleasant.

The message would be like...
"Hello, we greatly appreciate your participation in the forum. We would enjoy for you to continue using our services. However, we've noticed you have not yet made an avatar for yourself. Though we honestly don't care, it makes the forum more enjoyable for yourself and others. It allows you to develop a reputation on the board. When you don't have an avatar, some people may not take the time to read your name, and it gives no credit to you. Having an avatar makes you easily identified.
If you don't know how to make an avatar, see here<---(linked). If you don't want, or feel the need for an avatar, that's fine. It is not required, and does nothing more than make it easier to make friends.
If you don't want to receive this message again, send a PM to ...... saying, 'I would like to stop receiving messages about not having an avatar.'"

I knew what you meant.  My point is that some people really don't like avatars.

Then include a "no and don't bother me with this in the future either" checkbox?

Avatars.  I think everybody should have to use one from the movie.

Even once every 500 message is too often.  If someone has reached 500 messages, they're well aware of what avatars are, why they're good, and that they don't have one.  The fair assumption is that it is a conscious choice of theirs to not have one.  I really don't see any need to tell them things that they already know.

Plus, it's not like it's a setting that can just be turned on.  It would require a major rewrite of the software, and I'm not going to do that.

Once people have 500 posts, they have seen other people with avatars and have CLEARLY had the time to add there own if they wanted. If the dont add one, Im sure they dont find it important as you do. Some people(mostly demonic posed people) dont like them and disable them. Sorry, but the world is a strange scare place  ;)
