I find it hard to believe that the neurologist went through school without ever learning about FC. Unless he never took a psych class.

He seems an older gentleman.  I don't think FC was really 'invented' until the late 80's.  Therefore, it's possible that he didn't learn about it in school.

Hmm... did the "fourth Novella" sound suspiciously like Brian Dunning? I smell a conspiracy.

Edit: ooh... they talked concussion/brain damage - my old research field.

I don't get 7.2 trillion Fahrenheit (or 4 trillion Kelvin, for those of us who learnt physics in the 20th or 21st century!) as a particularly high temperature. An electron volt is equivalent to a temperature of 11,605K (here), so the temperature of particles in somewhere like Fermilab or the LHC at 1TeV would be 11,605 trillion Kelvin (20,889 trillion fahrenheit).

So, in what sense is 7.2 trillion F a record?

To my knowledge, Michael Shermer isn't affiliated with CalTech.

The SGU once interviewed Seth Shostak, who is an alumnus.

I think Dr.  Laureys might have come around a little more than Steve suggested.  In the Tribune article he was quoted as saying

Quote
Laureys wouldn't discuss the third patient, who seemed to be communicating successfully. He called for more research but said these results were a "big warning" about facilitated communication.

"We should concentrate our efforts on non-facilitated communication," said Laureys, director of the Coma Science Group at the University of Liege in Belgium.

Opening up a news story about the murder of those 2 women, with david byrne doing 'psycho killer', then almost insisting that there was something more to the story,  and then calling it 'how pseudoscience kills'???

Really, really poor taste...

Good episode otherwise though.

They sorta sounded to me like they came in light and realized they couldn't make fun of this. It was a little awkward.

I thought that Desiree Jennings treatment by Rebeca wa a little on the harsh side.  But eh no one is perfect, we al lhave errors in judgment and these were not egregious.

Ok she is sick, but does that let you off the hook for being irresponsible? She could get some free counseling from Dr. Novella, but chooses Jenny McIdiot instead.

The woman with the pseudo-dystonia following a 'flu shot does not have an Australian accent.  And strewth, Australians don't have accents, it's you Americans who have the accents.

Actually, the first thing that occurred to me with the story about the psychic being killed by one of her clients was; why didn't she see it coming?

When galaxy clusters collide, the ordinary matter in stars etc (and the dark matter, if there is such a thing) pass straight through, but the gas clouds collide with each other with enormous force and velocity and generate enormous temperatures of around 100 million degrees Celsius and high energy X rays (but as Rebecca says, it is a dry heat and probably tolerable ... not).

low-hanging fruit.
I'm sure they all thought it...and realized they've used that one enough already.
