String?

Yeah, the explanations Ive found say its invisible string that you attach with wax, one end to the card and the other behind your ear (so that it is supported to hang and has a range of movement to go around your body).

A guy did it to me and made it go around me. No string. And it landed back on the table, then popped back up and went around my wife.

Now, THAT is a bit annoying!

It was! It was at Universal City Walk (in Orlando) and he was selling the trick. I didn't buy it, but I kinda wish I had.

There were like 20 people standing around watching him do it over and over. He could make it hover for quite a while (spinning) and make it land in your hand and the it would take off again. And like the video.. he would do it with your driver license too.

I know it's a trick, but I have yet to find the solution.

This is something that has fascinated me for a long time as a magician.

Why do some people just accept watching magic for its enjoyment and others try everything in their power to try and figure it out (often accepting the most implausible - and wrong - solutions as the alleged answer)?  It's not like he was claiming the levitating card (or the restored card or whatever) was real magic.  He, you and everyone else knows it was just a trick meant for people to watch for a bit of momentary enjoyment at seeing something so seemingly fantastic.

Do these same people try to figure out all the CGI effects that makes it look like Spiderman really climbs walls and really swings through the streets of New York on spider webs?  Or do they just sit back and enjoy the movie for what it is - a couple of hours of escapism fantasy?

I'm not being flippant or sarcastic.  I truly want to know what makes some people so damned determined to try and figure out magic instead of just enjoying it.  I can understand if someone wanted to become a magician and then incorporate an effect into their routine (but then the ethical thing to do would be to purchase the effect from the creator - unless it is in public domain).  But wouldn't knowing the secret take away the pleasure?  Le's face it, it is fun to see impossible things.  Think about it.  Seeing the magician restore the card back to an impossible position and seeing the card float around your body has made you remember these things to the point of telling other people about them.  If you knew how they were done, that feeling of wonder and awe would be gone and could never be gotten back.

Personally, I only feel wonder and awe the first time I see a particular trick anyway... Its the novelty and strangeness that make it wonderous. Once Ive seen it once, a second showing just reminds me of the first rather than feeling amazing and unique - and the memory of my feeling the first time I saw the trick doesnt change regardless of whether Im remembering it because Im seeing it again or because Im investigating it.

After that first time, its like any other feat of mental or physical prowess. I feel inspired or excited by sports or by amazing scientific theories, and I can equally be inspired or excited by feats of dexterity or clever planning and trickery, regardless of knowing how its done. I like the feeling of "Ohhhh, thats clever!" just as much as I like the feeling of "Oh, thats weird!".

I generally enjoy a magic demonstration without looking too closely, but I can get additional enjoyment after-the-fact by discovering more awesome things about it like how inventive and clever it is.
