Beer!

It's a matter of personal opinion of course, and it changes as beers come and go and change, but in the various rating schema, one beer generally tends to come to the top.

I can't imagine a Belgian Trappist Ale is a good place to start. I haven't had Westvleteren, but I'll definitely be on the lookout for it now.

I'd say a good place to start is with something with milder flavors. A good craft Blonde Ale, or something like Magic Hat #9, or even a Franziskaner Weis/Hefeweis.

Oh sure, not the ideal starting place in all likelihood.  To find out what YOUR favorite beer is, taste everything.  It becomes a hobby.

Guinness

Athough to be fair Guinness is a stout, although I was surprised to see it marketed as a beer in the States.

But yea. Guinness.

And in what definition of "Beer" is a stout not a beer?

There are legal distinctions in some places that weird the whole classification thing up.  Same with terms in common use (stout, ale, lager etc).  But in any fact-based classification, ya, stout is beer.

Well over here lager and weissbier would be called beer. In common parlance as opposed to the technical term.

I say start with anything Belgian.

One of my favorites is Delirium Tremens.

Again, I can't imagine someone who has never been into beer diving straight into a Delirium Tremens. Maybe it can happen, but I feel like you need to work up to the flavorful and somewhat bitter high alcohol content Belgian beers.

Hey, I went straight from cheap American light beer to Delirium Tremens.

I will say that nowadays my usual beer of choice is Bass. I'd get the Belgians more often, but unfortunately they tend to be more expensive. I can get Bass for $4.25 at one of my local bars and for free at the theatre where I occasionally work.

In general, anything from Dogfish Head brewery will be spectacular. While Midas touch is my absolute favorite it's pricey due to the ingredients used and touchy about the serving temperature. Fresh from the fridge it tastes like a regular light ale. If you let it warm up to cellar temperature though the honey, muscat grapes and saffron take over resulting in an ambrosia like beverage.

Palo Santo Marron is another one of my favorites. It too is best at cellar temperature.
