New Sherlock from the BBC
« on: Jul 25, 2010, 03:15:57 PM »
It just started on BBC 1. I had no idea they were doing a modern version.

So far it looks quite interesting.

We've been watching the 1980's Granada version here for some weeks.  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086661/  It is quite good.

The Jeremy Brett series' are brilliant.  Not only were the shows faithful to the A.C. Doyle stories, but Brett captured Holmes' brilliance, flaws and emotions, and actually made him a believable and multi-dimensional character.

When we lived in London many years ago, we had the pleasure of seeing him and Edward Hardwicke in their play, The Secret of Sherlock Holmes

Jack I am totally jealous.  I think he is the best S.H. ever.  And I want those curtains.

This is a totally modern Sherlock.  And it was very entertaining.

The new Sherlock was quite perfect, which is a very difficult thing considering how many fab Sherlocks there have been.

Looks good.  I'll have to try to find a torrent.

I get the idea this sounds vaguely in the vein of how BBC did that new Robin Hood that ended back a little while ago.  The one that was popcorn fun that bordered on cheese far too often.. but such glorious cheese.

Well, it would have a way to go to be as silly as the Robert Downey Jr. version.  For my money, the best crazy modernization of Sherlock Holmes was "The Zero Effect" with Bill Pullman - and Ben Stiller as Watson in an LA twist on "A Scandal in Bohemia."

Hulu - The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes - Watch the full feature film now.

One of the better movie translations available.  Well shot, well acted, good plotting.

What's the actual name of the show?  I'm trying to find it so I can send it to my TiVo to record.  (Seriously, isn't technology awesome?!)

Sherlock.

I think there is only three. Sunday night is 2/3 The Blind Banker.

1/3 was something like the mysterious suicides.

Weird.  I can't find it on the TiVo website.  Are you watching it on BBC, or BBC America?  If it's a new show on BBC, it'll probably take a few months to reach us down here across the pond.

BBC 1, not BBC America.

It is new in England.

Well, I guess I'll have to remain content with my "new" Dr. Who episodes in the meantime...
