You know, there have been a couple of great skeptical episodes of The Next Generation.  I wouldn't discount Star Trek that quickly.  I especially like the episode where the proto Vulcan society thought captain Picard was "The Overseer" (God) and he had to convince them that he wasn't ... and it was tough to do too.

All sci-fi shows were merely precursors, a foundation for the fantastical, imaginative Farscape.

I didn't say I don't like ST. I'm just not going to Cons, dressing up or memorizing ranks and spaceship classifications. I've only seen a couple of episodes entirely because the reruns air at very weird times here.

My favorite shows are Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. I don't really like the military parts, but most of the time they travel around debunking evil wannabe-gods or mind-control scams, solving moral conflicts and discovering cool ancient stuff. Of course when it gets to myon ghosts, time travel and the like, you have to accept it's sci-fi after all. I only wish that after finding all those aliens posing as the gods of egyptian, norse, roman, greek, asian and south-american history, the writers would let them go for the monotheistic religions as well - THAT would be fun    (and would probably buy them some problems with the non-skeptic part of their audience )

To me sci-fi should be mainly rooted in science, ghost and gods are not for me.

I dont know if you've had a chance to watch the new Battlestar Galactica where you are, but it's unbelievably good.  I used to love Stargate SG1 but compared to Battlestar Galactica it's cheesy.  There are many layers to the story involving all aspects of humanity, but one of the major ones is that the humans believe in many gods, and the Cylons (robots) believe in only one God.  It's great hearing the humans walk around saying "praise the gods" etc.  One of the best scenes is when a priest played by Dean Stockwell (Quantum Leap) tells one of the humans strait out there are no gods, and why people believe in them ... it's one of the best Atheist speeches I've ever heard and someday I'll watch it again and write it all down EDIT:(actually I found a transcript, but I'm going to make a new thread so I don't fill this one with more off topic stuff lol).  It's an amazing show ... I know that in Germany they've really cracked down on P2P but still, it's worth watching if maybe your friend downloaded it or something.

You know ... I played a Stargate paintball scenario and I rigged my paintball gun with a quick release to the harness so I could carry it hands free just like on the show.  Yes, I'm one of those dress up geeks you speak of (c:

Are skeptics typically sci-fi readers?  If you are, what's your favorite Sci-Fi novel?  I'll say Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land is my favorite.  I also like Ringworld by Larry Niven.
ou're a fanstastic audience.  Thank you ladies and gentlemen.  Thank you very much.

Hey all!

Well, my name is Daniel, I'm from Quebec, Canada and altho I'm not a christian scientist, I'm a french speaking guy, which can be considered worst by some people! ;-) So, sorry if I mishandle your language once in a while.

And ohh...here's how I stumbled here...

First of all, I've been curious all my life...about science...and about the supernatural... Yes, I must admit, I've been a believer for a big part of my life...

All my youth, I was reading science books but also, books on UFOs and ghosts and all that stuff...I was very much interested in it and, I hated sceptics... ;-) (not anymore btw!)

I went to the university and did a bachelor degree in physics and one in biology... I'm now a biologist who studies aquatic habitats for plants, fish and other stuff by using computer models. As I was growing and learning, I started realizing that, my views on life and its mysteries were changing. My science education was slowly becoming in conflict with my beliefs in UFOs and all that stuff. I must point out tho that I've never been too much of a religious person altho I was interested in the subject...part of my curious side...

And one day, a couple years ago, I found the James Randi Fondation site on the web. It was enlightening to say the least! I became more and more of a sceptic with time. I would say of myself now that I'm a sceptic who wants to believe. But not at any costs. Like all the sceptics, I want proofs! Anyway, Randi's site led me a few months ago to the skepchick's site! I've been reading Rebecca's blog everyday since then! Her humor hooked me and, when she blogged about joining the podcast of the Sceptics guide to the universe, I just had to listen to it. I've been listening to it every week since then and I must say that you guys are wonderful! I love your subjects and your interviews! And Rebecca, continue to make me laff! You're the best!

See ya!

And Rebecca's following continues to grow...

Rebecca, off-hand, how many men have asked you out on a date that know you through your blog, podcasts and or calander?
How many times has someone asked that question?
How often have you answered these starstruck questions?
Is this the first time anyone has asked you the previous question?

I'm not much into science fiction, but if it means conversation about Quantum Leap, I'm in.  Did anyone find Jaan's new thread yet?

Sheila, feel free to start up that thread if Jaan hasn't gotten around to it yet. And speaking of . . .
