It used to be that sock puppetry was trumpeted as one of the Internet's best features. It was going to be glorious, because we'd have the freedom to be whoever we wanted to be, and all at the same time, if we so desired.

Then somewhere along the way someone realized it was mostly just being used as another way for people to be annoying.

I've been on the net since 1992 and it's always been frowned upon.  Also this not sockpuppetry. Sockpuppetry is having multiple accounts under different names.

How did you get from Bunsen parodying Niemöller to Bunsen calling the mods Nazis?

Yeah, I'm still working that one out myself.  Apparently not even literary references are allowed in Jack's world?  And, vague literary references that weren't directed at a mod, at that.
Who were "they"?
A vague, non-specific plural pronoun used in the original Niemöller quote to denote the National Socialists, and used in my post because I was parodying Niemöller?

We could go to Beleth and ask if he thought I was calling him a Nazi for making a joke about HarryBallz getting banned months ago, if it really ruffles your feathers so badly to realize that you don't understand such a simple concept as literary reference.

Parody, look it up.  This isn't scathing political commentary, it's a freaking forum on the internet.  The only Nazi in the room right now is the Quote Nazi.  Don't be the Quote Nazi.  It's obvious to anyone who read the original post that I wasn't insulting any mods.

I for one would appreciate it if this forum grew up and people stopped calling mods Nazis, even if it is meant only as a joke. And I won't miss Lead Farmer or any other of those guys who apparently have to be obnoxious teenagers forever, just because they can on the Internet. Go Beleth! :)

Sock puppetry, as you define it, is indeed what I was referring to.  The time at which it was being trumpeted as a good idea was brief, because it was such a very bad idea.  But there was a point when developers of some of the earlier social software such as Sandy Stone of ACTLab (one of the first folks to agitate for the democratization of academia that would later achieve maturity in projects such as Wikipedia) saw the possibility of maintaining multiple simultaneous identities in a virtual environment - facilitated by the ability to have multiple names within that environment - and thought it would be an powerful and healthy psychological outlet.

You mean I should stop addressing my PMs to Beleth with "Mein Führer," and stop ending my PMs to Panda with "Sieg Heil?"

Can I still call Dr. Vertex "Comrade Party Leader," or is that out, too?

::)

You know, as much as I dislike LF calling Beleth a Nazi for enforcing basic rules around here, I bet he would look damned sexy in some Jackboots...

LD, is an apology for offending someone really so hard? Particularly if you didn't mean to offend them. Perhaps a suspension might be in order if you have such a disregard for other members.

I bet there is a way to model the likelihood of a drama bomb occurring by analyzing the time since the last one occurred.  The further the distance from the last drama bomb, the more likely the next one is to occur.

An additional variable would include the population of douchbags

Seems like any new feature that gets added to forums just ends up being disabled  because people abuse it.
