regarding chain lubing...
should I be cleaning it off until it's no longer black with grime?
in this vid, he just whips through it fairly superficially.
would you recommend doing it any differently? (I was doing it with newspaper, not a rag, and trying to be a little more particular, e.g., applying pressure with fingers to the sides of the chain rather than just a fistful of rag enveloping the chain, in addition to running over the top and bottom while the paper went black (a little upwards or downwards pressure, whichever wouldn't cause it to shift out of gear)))
is there a point at which I've wiped off too much lube? can I get it to the point where it stops leaving heavy black marks in the cleaning paper/rag. if I do, will I have to reapply lube and give it a superficial wipe off of any excess?
my main concerns are
- making one thing worse in trying to make another better
- black marks staining my pants.
edit: oh, and any tips on the sprockets (again, I've kind of held the sides to get grime off, since obviously grabbing it any other way will just get things tangled up on the teeth.
