On a lighter note, I encountered this fellow while I was out Sunday afternoon checking out a new Hiking/Mountain Bike trail.  I stepped right next to him before I heard his rattle.  I'm lucky he decided to warn me.
Scary.

I'm looking right at it and I can still barely see it.

Yep, after I heard the rattle, it took me a second to realize it was a snake, so I ran a few steps down the trail.  Then I decided to take a picture.  I couldn't find the snake until I got close enough to make him rattle again.  It's pretty amazing how good their camouflage is.  And this is the time of year when their schedules coincide with human schedules quite nicely.  It was a timely reminder to watch where I step.  ;D

Luckily I don't trust anyone so I managed to avoid catastrophe.

Big enough to hurt. I don't like to mess with Rattlers, had a bunch of them down in SIU when I was in school.

I come from a snakeless country. ...I'm looking for more of a '10cm'/'1m' sort of idea, as I also know nothing of rock formations to suggest its size.

This may not be the best place to post this, but I've been thinking about getting into inline skating again. It's been about a decade since I last skated, and 15 years since I did it regularly. I'm thinking in terms of a cardio workout it's pretty good and relatively low impact for my knackered joints.

Now I just need to buy some skates...and pads....and a helmet....etc etc etc.

The inline skate technology is really improved since you last skated. I play roller hockey and it is just amazing how light the skates are now a days.

Yeh last time I skated there was no such thing as anti-rocker wheels and replaceable backside plates. While I'd like to do some aggressive stuff I can't see myself (a pudgy 30 year old) hitting the skate parks with all the kiddies. I'll probably end up just getting some recreational skates and cruise the esplanades checking out the scenery.

Wait...I thought all of the deadly snakes lived in Australia..?

New Zealand is 'down under', but we don't have the deadly animals or free and easy women of Australia.
