...$5000 for a pair of wheels?

wtf is the prize money like?!

There are wheels more expensive than that if you want.

A Mavic IO, which is the most used front wheel on track bikes at elite level, cost ~ $5,500 each.

The cost of competition racing is why I will only ever compete with myself. I'm always a winner!

Also, riding everywhere does not prepare you for walking everywhere. I've been walking around Portland the last couple of days and my shins are on fire.

I always seem to need to update my walking around shoes when I go on a trip and walk around a city. After a day or two of the shin splints and the pain in my feet, I duck in somewhere and usually get a new pair of New Balance walking or running shoes. New cushy soles under my dogs does wonders on my walkabouts.

That was going to be my suggestion. If you have persistent shin splints it's worth checking out a good pair of shoes, or possibly orthotic inserts for them.

I don't think it's as severe as shin splints, and I already have inserts for my shoes, having spent the previous 9 years on my feet. I might need new shoes, though. I'm going shoe shopping next week (payday). My wide-toed skate shoes are comfy and all, but can get awkward in the pedal cages.

I would like a good pair of running shoes. I've seen a pair of Adidas that I approved of, but they were not my size. Stupid big feet.

Asics make good running shoes, however unfortunately I have a wayward pinkie toe which tends to wear through the mesh on the corners really quickly. Going to have to go for some New Balance or something next time I think.

Sigh,  that kid's wheels cost more than both my bikes combined.  LOL
Those wheels are approx $5,000 for the pair.  That's the low end for that brand BTW.  They go up from there.

I just threw up a little in my mouth. Knowing nothing about that kid I feel that it's safe to assume that he's a total d-bag.

FTFY. Seriously, knowing how fast kids grow, that is just a waste of money. If the kid wants to get into cycling proper, good on him. But go join a club and race against other kids with the kit, not a local fun race. This just smacks of some Dad racing through his kid because he wasn't able to do it when he was younger.

Well yeah, the dad definitely, but the kid is destined to be a d-bag because of the dad. That's just science.

what's their resale value?

or just get into racing with the local club and don't spend good college money on the pro shit. ...kids typically understand.

My kid "races" in triathlons.  He's 8.  He is doing it purely for fun at this point and could care less about the competition aspect (even though he normally finishes on the podium >:D).  My son's bike cost $250 bucks and I hope to get 2-3 years out of it.  His tri suit was provided by my sponsor.  When he's old enough and if he's serious about racing, I would be willing to invest more in good equipment but for now, as his proud dad (and also a triathlete), I am happy as long as he's enjoying it.  He also plays tennis and soccer - we'll see what pans out.  I am shocked at the behavior of some of the parents of the other kids I see at youth triathlons!  I've seen dads yelling at their 6 year old - saying things like: "This poor attitude is why you LOSE all the time!"  I want to walk over and punch them in the mouth!

With all the grinning going on in those pictures, it's obvious the kid is being tortured.     Seriously, though, that's great that your boy is into fitness.   He looks like a cool kid.
