I've been playing guitar for about 7 years now. I've just about heard it all and can play most of it. If there are any guitar guys around here and you enjoy some Steve Vai or Satriani, you've likely been deprived of some of the musical

Shawn Lane is arguably (in my eyes of course) the greatest guitarist to ever live on just about every level, from composition, to phrasing, and technique.. Check his music out... He unfortunately passed away at a very young age, I believe 6 or 7 years ago.

Shawn Lane - Gray Pianos Flying (REH, full quality version)

One guitarist that can rival anyone I've heard in terms of attitude, virtuosity, etc, is Guthrie Govan. He plays some amazing music.. Christ I just listened to this again... Check out 1:22.... I need more practice...

Can't see it at work, but Starcrunch from Man or Astro Man? is amazing.

Way more interesting that those shred guys.

I wouldn't classify these dudes as "shred" at all... The yngwie malsteens and JS Bach (modern day guitarist) are shredders.. These guys incorporate extremely fast playing with amazing melodic playing... "amazing blazing phrasing" as Paul Gilbert called it...

Yeah I appreciate the technique etc.. but it's just so... not Man or Astro Man?
I like humour in my guitar. And a bit of sleaze too.

I've been playing for a long time, I think nearly 20 years (wow, that went fast).
Went through my vai/satch/steen stage about  16-17 years ago. These guys are good, but the music isn't lighting my fire.

In all of the guitar mags of my early days, they were lumped together as shredders. Malmsteen had his melodies too, don't forget that ;)

Now do yourself a favour and check out MOAM. I promise it wont disappoint.

Took my a few to realize that the name of the band was Man or Astro Man.. I was like what the hell is he talking about?? I just listened to "Spferic Waves"... Definitely a cool sound, like surfer music on steroids. I don't enjoy listening to it for more than a few minutes though, I'll admit...  ;)

I've always been into the best of the best, whether its the most impressive performance,  the fastest car, or the most elegant guitar technique...I suppose I'm not impressed by guitarists that play music I could easily learn in 20 minutes... I've always been into those who push the threshold of what I previously thought was possible on the guitar, while sounding good at the same time. I enjoy listening to music and thinking holy shit what was that chord he just played, or how did he pull off that arpeggiated tapping riff like that, then sitting down and trying to figure it out.

Then there's yours truly, paling in comparison to the guitar gods.. I do my part pretending to be one though... 8)

Here's a vid of my playing at a local semi-pro football game on 9/11 of this year. I was asked to play once on campus at a sporting event, one of the guys in the audience asked me after to play at a veterans benefit strongman competition a few months back, and a guy there afterward asked me to play at this game... funny how things work out, eh? Anyway here's my most recent attempt at the National Anthem live in front of a LARGE crowd...

EDIT: let me mention it was taken at the last minute on my dads cell phone, so disregard the shitty a/v quality. It sounded and I looked much better in person... I promise...  ;D

Well I'm a few years past that stage, and am slowed down by injury and leaky tendons.

I was force fed MOAM and now I'm a bloody scifi-surf junkie.

So, this thread is to show guitarists you've come across, or you enjoy, but don't expect people to be aware of them? Um, okay!

Allan Holdsworth Trio - The Sixteen Men Of Tain - Warsaw 1998

I expect a few to know of Holdsworth.

ron jarzombek - R.E.M.

They didn't. :) Daikaiju (they do the Escapepod theme song) have a similar "surf-fusion" sound. They're much less punk-influenced, though, from what I've heard.
