When I was a little more um, immature, I would have scoffed at this list because there are so many more players with better technical virtuosity.  But back then I really underestimated the power of popular appeal.  It takes a certain kind of talent to develop a guitar style with such mass appeal.

I don't understand. Are you saying he's the one in that list with enough technical virtuosity, or that he doesn't have "a certain kind of talent"? I would disagree on both counts, and were I to make a popular list I'd probably put Neil Young* in his place.

In other news, my favourite Brazilian, Edgard Scandurra:

ETA: * I'd put him anyway. And I do like Richards, but more as a composer. I like his singing too.

I think the key word in the article is "greatest." It's a misleading list, using the terms "greatest" and "best" interchangeably. Being popular or well known does not always equate to being the best.

OK It was kind of tongue in cheek, just my personal preference, I've never been that impressed with his playing.

Joe "Flyin' Fingers" Maphis: King of the Strings:

Joe Maphis - Pickin' And Singin'

Also, Robert Fripp. He's one of the only guitarists who can be said to 'shred' that I actually like - his phrasing, sound and sense of melody are very atypical of most 'shredding' you hear. I sort of consider him the thinking man's guitar hero. His more atmospheric stuff (aka Frippertronics) is also great.

Here's an example of his 'shredding' (though I wouldn't really call it that), starts about 1:20 (but listen to the whole song, it's great!):

Brian Eno - St. Elmo's Fire - Another Green World - 1975

and here's a bit of (prerecorded) Frippertronics with Fripp soloing over it:

Robert Fripp - Frippertronics Demonstration '79

I like Fripp and pretty much agree with what you said of him. And his having worked with the likes of Bowie and Eno certainly helps too.

Yeah, I got into King Crimson and Bowie around the same time, but I'll be damned if it didn't take a few years until I figured out that "that guy from King Crimson" was playing on some of my favorite Bowie tunes. At first I was sort of shocked to learn that he was involved in so many great albums, but now that I know his playing better, it should have been obvious in many cases based on his tone, if nothing else. His work with Eno is some of my favorite in any genre.

Another one that's far from obscure but is rarely mentioned in top guitarists lists is Robbie Krieger. He's discreet, but gets the job done with near perfection. He's the main reason I even find the Doors tolerable.

(OK, I like 'em, it's just that I've heard too many times Morrison lamenting the music being over :P)

Turn out the lights.

It is good to mention the players that just get it done, no showboating, they don't need to, they just play great all the time.

I have been on a serious Devin Townsend kick for a few months now, he will never be one of the greats, but he does do one of the great solos.

I was expecting that to be corny, but it was actually pretty good.  That guy is good and this metal version is awesome!
