One of the few TV episodes that warranted multiple viewings. The first 20 minutes was seriously epic.

The lady with the katana popping up out of nowhere was awesome. I've never read the comics, so I wasn't expecting it. I was iffy on this show after the first half of season 2 dragged on (with the only interesting episode being the last one when Shane finally put a stop to the nonsense and cleared out the barn), but this season finale renewed my interest. Can't wait for season 3.

OK.... now that the new season is starting I tried to catch up with Season 2, which I missed.

The problem was the first episode, the one with all the zombies stumbling through the abandoned traffic.  Everybody seemed to screw up in a way that resulted in detection by a small number of zombies.  Finally the little girl was saved by the sheriff who hid her in a log and said he was going to distract the two zombies who were a few steps behind her, but apparently stopped long enough for a conversation to take place.  "I get winded, they don't," he said.

What sense does that make?  Where are these zombies getting their energy.  If they can run, why do they spend so much time shambling?  If they need to eat, why don't they just eat eachother?  I know, it would mean just one fat zombie after a while, but they seem awfully picky for mindless beasts.  The illogic of the show just keeps pulling me out.

I am glad to see that someone eventually shows up with a samurai sword, but is it really worth wading through 20 episodes of various other inventive ways of dispatching the decaying to get to that?

If you're reading the comics, then yes... the story is fucking awesome.

If you're only watching the show... I dunno. Just assume it's made for stupid people and try to enjoy it.

Have you never watched or read something featuring zombies before?  I don't really think the "illogic" that is bugging you is in any way specific to this show, but rather part of the general nature of a "zombie".  There are arguments presentable for each of the things that seem to be bugging you, but they all require at least a bit of a suspension of disbelief because of the fact that Zombies are by their nature, in any and all forms, fictional things.

Honestly... I'm not even sure what I meant by that; probably just that I think the show's been "dumbed down" from the comics. I was rather drunk when I posted. The comics/TV show are two wildly different stories that involve some of the same characters and scenarios.

meh, both good. I enjoy the show. I love the comics. The differences are definitely fun--having no idea what's going to happen in the show (since it's already diverged so far from the comics) is awesome. Balanced with the fact that the comic's story is about as good as I can possibly imagine a zombie story being, the show probably can't ever live up to my personal feelings on it... but yes, it's way fun to watch, and the show's divergence from the comics does make the show more interesting to watch.

Most books are dumbed down when they get adapted for the screen, it happens.

I wasn't that impressed by Season 1, so waited until Season 2 showed up on Netflix before watching.  BIG improvement!

Now, of course, I'm sucked in so have to buy Season 3 episodes on Amazon as they roll out.  Loved the premiere; the effects just keep getting better and better.

I just ordered Vol. 2 of the comics.

S3E1 nits:

1) High boots people. Wear high boots. Armor up. No one armors up?
2) I'd have stayed behind the fence and killed more zombies before going into the yard.
3) Double tap. Even dead ones.

Observations:

1) Looks like some time has passed.
2) Maybe they listened to fan bois and decided "oh yeah, silencers".
3) Phalanx tactics. Great.

It was great, and I feel like they listened to everyone that said last season moved to slow.

One thing that kinda bugged me was that I know who Michone is and why she has the chained up, de-jawed and de-armed zombies, but I feel like people who havn't read the comics must be totally lost.  I don't even think they said her name, did they?
