Damn!

Per the video, one of the docs said, "You have to resist the temptation to just pull (the spear) out" but he didn't say how they removed it.  Did they push the remainder of it towards the tip, completing the trajectory?  Or cut into the skull and remove it laterally?  It seems to me, doing that would just cause MORE damage.

Well of course they pulled it out, but only after they x-rayed the hell out of the guy to make sure it was safe to do so. When he said you shouldn't pull it out he was referring to immediately after suffering such an injury.

This took place in the US. Maybe the doc meant that you shouldn't pull the spear out until after you have verified the patient's insurance coverage.
If one is going to be ignorant, then one may as well make a thorough and studied job of it.

It is awesome but.... With the start of Kepler it's way out of date. Last I heard it was 12,000 planets.

I have a feeling that technically Kepler might be finding planet candidates, while the XKCD figure is confirmed planets.

Ditto,
BTW, you forgot the Tooltip.

Planets are turning out to be so common that to show all the planets in our galaxy, this chart would have to be nested in itself--with each planet replaced by a copy of the chart--at least three levels deep.
