Well, I'm downloading the Kindle app onto my iPod, we'll see what I think in a few minutes.

The digital ink is what really makes the Kindle and the Nook shine FWIW. The best way to go, I'd say, is to walk into a Barnes and Noble and take a look at the actual device. Not the color one, though, because I don't think that uses the digital ink technology that's MASSIVELY easy to read and looks so much like ink that if you're me you will spend a minute or two trying to peel the (non existent) screen protector off the device.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons that I'm interested in getting an actual ereader instead of just using my iPod.

Well the wife has been using her new nook for a week now and she really likes it. It is nice to be able to down load a book and start reading it right away. There are a few free books on the barns and noble site that she has looked at. The real selling point of the nook over the kindle is the ability to check out books from the library. I have yet to figure out how to do this. My wife gets eye strain from reading on a computer and she has not noticed any such discomfort from her nook.

Yeah, I tried it out on my droid and my laptop before committing.

It has a couple of interesting features.  The kindle will play audio books and mp3s, and has a text to speech function with an audio interface (spoken menus).  It also has a browser, although I don't think that functionality is particularly useful in this instance - with a monochromatic screen and no touch screen this isn't a particularly friendly tablet.

The e-ink is good.  The screen is very readable and eye friendly.  The book prices are OK.  On the whole, I'm happy with it.

Well Amazon has finally decided to allow lending of it's eBooks.  I'm curious to see if this will effect libraries or not.  For now the site says,

Eligible Kindle books can be loaned once for a period of 14 days.
So still not as friendly as the Nook.

Panda, the base Nook is $149.

I've had the Nook for about 6 months now.  Reading a physical book seems very archaic to me now.  It's the difference between a CD collection and an MP3 player.

It could even go one step farther in that everyone will not really own books but just read them online with a nook/kindle like device and have them on a server. Like a library does now but wireless. It will be a bit painful for some stores but in the long run it will be better for the market as a whole I think.

Except with the Nook you can then check out books from your local library for free and with the Kindle you have to pay $10 and up for the same books.  Don't give me the line about all the free books either because both systems have the same 200 year old free books.

Unless Kindle decides to completely open up their software I'm going with the Nook in June.

I'm loving my ipad. Sepia big letters low light. Love. Heavier than my wife's kindle, but I can also switch over to the forum right before bed. Course it cost a 1000 bucks. I really told people I would like the cheapest model. But with the memory it's a photo library too, and let me tell you best picture viewer ever!

wow that's pretty sweet! I find myself trying to make my kindle a touch screen and it's not :(  I also really like that it supports epub and has expandable memory.

If this had happened next week, I'd be excited. Now I'm just a little sad. :(
