It is also the site of the dramatic farewell threads when people have some issue with how some issue is dealt with or how they are dealt with.

I haven't kept stats, but I am aware of at least one drama queen now returning to the site after the indignant departure.

It is also the site where people like to beat others with their big sceptical stick.

It really sucks sometimes, and I can see why people leave, but I don't understand the public departure threads.

I think everyone thinks their contributions to a forum are worth something, but some people think their contributions are worth more than others. I can't imagine me ever having a disagreement with someone on a forum that affected me so much that I felt I had to make some dramatic departure. From my few attempts, I find JREF website to be very unaccommodating to feedback, so I'm not going to use it to interact with others. I find SGU forum more intellectually stimulating and frankly more open and welcome.

There is definitely more of a sense of community on this site than on the JREF.

I do think that people who have been posting there for ten years + and been to numerous TAMs have their own little cliques, but there is no overall community.

JREF gets far more trolls and crackpots than we do. They have many twoofers, moon hoaxer, JFK CTs, and holocaust deniers and not just the hit and run kind. Some of their dedicated nuts have thousands of posts.

Of that I have no doubt, but if it's so bad you have to block people like drwfishesman from posting then I have to wonder why you allow posting at all.

I agree, and am really proud of you guys because of it.

It's funny - the JREF forum may not have a community, but it has spawned off more communities than I can keep track of any more. I'm still part of a chat room that's mostly JREF Forum expatriates, and they are a lively, funny crowd.

But yeah, the JREF has considered its forum a drain instead of a resource for many, many years now, and it shows. People become friends despite the administration there, not because of it... and that's sad.

Oh yes. In fact I believe it's become the "go-to" place on the Web if you want to have a serious discussion about 9/11. We get the occasional quack or space elf here, but we get nothing compared to the JREF forum. Amazing the types of folks having a Million Dollar Challenge will attract. ;)

As pretty much anyone who posts there will know, I am a frequent poster at the JREF Forums. I've posted there since 2005 and my post count is rapidly approaching 40,000. In fact, I am right now the 7th Top Poster, considering Darat (the forum admin), AutoModAction (the forum robot) are the top two. I have been a moderator, but I resigned that role for personal reasons. And for the record, I think the place gets a bad rap.

There have been some contentious moderator decisions, yes. I wasn't particularly happy with the no-commercial-links ruling, but that happened after I was a moderator. If it had happened while I still was, I would have voiced my opinion against it. And I have to say that my enjoyment of the site increased when I stopped participating in Forum Management/Feedback threads. But speaking as someone with 40,000 posts and only two infractions in that time, the rules really aren't all that hard to follow. I also usually don't take part in the monstrously long threads like Amanda Knox or those started by the infamous "DOC". And yes, if I post in a thread that suddenly explodes overnight, I'll usually lose interest and unsubscribe from it.

But there's one thing that I have to disagree with.

I do think that people who have been posting there for ten years + and been to numerous TAMs have their own little cliques, but there is no overall community.

It's the community that I love most about the JREF Forum. I have made friends there. If not for the community, I wouldn't have taken the trip to the US to go to TAM7. While in the US I stayed with friends, got driven about with friends, attended a show with friends, visited the Grand Canyon with friends, attended TAM, participated in the Talent Show, and hung out at the Del Mar with friends - friends that I had met and become friends with on that forum. I haven't encountered that kind of community anywhere else on the intarwebs. Perhaps it's because I post mostly in Humor and, well, Community.

Now, I don't want to bang on and on about this, because I don't really want to get into this-place/that-place arguments. I like it. I don't expect everyone else to, and that's okay. Everyone's experience is going to differ. Yes, it has its flaws. Yes, the moderation can be arbitrary at times. But while I'll happily post here and other places online, the JREF Forum is my home. The family may be a little dysfunctional, but I love 'em anyway.

Im not sure that you actually disagreed, there. :P

Allowing for a little exaggeration in Tatyana's comment, you pretty much described what she said. Youre a long term member with many posts who has been to at least one TAM, which is exactly who she said do find a clique of friends there.

Well, okay. But I wouldn't exactly call it a clique. Unless it's a clique that allows anybody to join. There's no "I've been to TAM and you haven't so you can't be friends with us" club.

From a thread entitled A Question for Conspiracy Theorists.

The op of that thread should try posting similar on ATS or David Icke's forum. Some of the replies on Icke's board actually had me wanting to report the posters to the police, except I Had no belief they would actually carry out their statements.

Then the moderation got out of hand, so I stopped.

I think the JREF is also full of old, miserable, self-righteous people.

There are some really lovely people there, but the lack of community and compassion is palpable.

There is one young poster on that site who has been very open about their medical and mental health issues, and it is his birthday.

People will not wish him a happy birthday because they probably have had a disagreement with him.

55 views on his birthday threads and 7 replies.

What miserable twats.

I want to start a thread on JREF if it is a site full of mean old people, because it really seems that way.

I have never seen a forum be so flipping stingy with basic human considerations.

I can point you to a dozen forums that make that place seem down right warm and fuzzy.  But unlike the JREF,  they don't pretend to be about educating the children.
