I heard about this stupidity on the way to work today. Apparently people are drinking unpasteurized milk because they feel it is better for them.

Fortunately the Food and Drug Administration is hunting down people who sell this stuff and putting them in jail where they can't hurt people.

Apparently it is leagal in some states to sell raw milk.

Oh.. before your time. Search for the thread titled Directly Downwind Faster Than The Wind.

It was 75+ pages of absurdity.

Well, all I know about how a dairy works is from "Dirty Jobs" and what I know about  milk is what I've seen on "Good Eats" and actually, there is a hell of a lot of science on "Good Eats", so though I am by no means an expert, or even qualified to speak on the subject, I think I have more information than joe sixpack from the street.  However, since you threw down the gauntlet:

Enlighten us Moa.

What does one get from raw milk that you can't get somewhere else in your diet?

What evidence do you have of whatever benefits you say there are?

Conditionally: Keep in mind if you mention Dr. Joseph Mercola, I will laugh and laugh....
Well.  There it is.

Heating raw milk to kill all the bacteria does just that.  In modern, dairies, there is little chance of infections in milk showing up in the commercial supply.  Both the cattle and the milk are rigourously tested before transport to processising facilities.  I don't know what corners are cut in the USA, but we treat our most valuable export product like the gold it is.

Bear in mind, the milk you feed your children on the grocery shelf has had all the beneficial bacteria killed, all milkfat removed and dried milkfat replaced to suit the colour of the cap on the bottle.  It is nothing like whole milk, the taste and texture will tell you that.

Personally, I like the W.A. Price take but you don't have to google too long to find the nutritional benefits of raw milk.  Obviously it is safe enough to allow commercial sale in eight states in the US.

I don't think people are suffering from a lack of good bacteria in this country but saying that raw milk is safe is crap.

Wait.. isn't heating raw milk to kill the bacteria also known as pasteurization?
