Atlantis Resort, on Paradise Island, across the bridge from Nassau, The Bahamas, is not nearly as expensive as someone said on the show, but it is definitely overpriced. Except for the water park and aquariums. The multiple aquariums are spectacular and well worth the price of a day pass. The food at the main buffet restaurant is good but not great, and is also overpriced, and you can wait an hour or more in line to get in. But there's a Subway and other restaurants just outside the resort.

Apologies if this is not the resort referred to on the show.

In shallow water a short boat ride out from Bimini Island, also in The Bahamas, there is a series of huge flat rocks or concrete slabs that the lunatic fringe calls "Atlantis Road," claiming that it is the remains of the Lost City of Atlantis, apparently oblivious of the fact that the mythical city was in the Mediterranean. It's a nice snorkeling spot.

Good episode although I have one problem.

I am not in any scientist of any kind... I had no idea what the hell DNA Computing was, and i was driving at the time so it wasn't like I could Wikipedia it. It was only when i finally got to my destination that i was able to look it up so i was knowing what you were talking about.

This has happened before when you had that guest who bidded for and won a guest spot. You guys go straight into talking whatever you are talking about with out any explanation of what it is. So sometimes I am unable to follow.

I think that when you guys talk about something that is slightly complicated and is not in your general weekly discussions you should give a breif explanation of what it is.  Even if it is a quick 30second-1min explanation. Will make it a lot easier to listen to instead of getting put off that episode.

Okay ignore the bits about DNA computing I realised I missed last weeks and you guys explained what it is there....

I was very surprised that you did a topic on whales and sonar and made no mention of Skeptoid #236 from this past December that was on this very topic. My takeaway from listening to Brian's podcast was that the possible connection between sonar and whale strandings was tenuous. So I was surprised that all the SGU guys were like "yeah I thought that was proven".

Anyone?
Yeah - l listened to that sckeptiod too and I was supprised by our SGUs thoughts on this too. I think the takehome from the Skeptoid podcast was that there were many other more important dangers for whales than navy sonar. But I can't remember details on this.

I actually noticed a lot of interchanging of the words 'theory' and 'hypothesis' in this episode. It's such a common mistake, but it bothers the heck out of my boyfriend and I...

I'm hardly an expert in the effects of sonar on whales, but what I was able to find out through a quick internet search seems to suggest that there is a strong link between breaching by some whale species and the use of certain types of sonar. From a 2005 report by the Natural Resources Defense Council:

Quote
That some types of active sonar are killing some species of marine mammals is no longer a matter of serious scientific debate. Beaked whales, a group of rarely seen, deepwater species, seem acutely vulnerable to the effects of mid-frequency sonar; and there is now a long and growing list of incidents in which these species (and sometimes others) come to shore and die while naval exercises unfold in the distance...On several occasions, bodies have been recovered in time to give evidence of acoustic trauma.
...
In a recent symposium at the International Whaling Commission, more than 100 whale biologists concluded that the association between sonar and beaked whale deaths "is very convincing and appears overwhelming." Back in the United States, a report commissioned by the Navy said much the same thing. "We would like to state at the outset," the authors wrote (all of them experts in bioacoustics and underwater physics), "that the evidence of sonar causation is, in our opinion, completely convincing and that therefore there is a serious issue of how best to avoid and minimize future breaching events."

I wasn't able to find the mentioned report from the International Whaling Commission on their website, but the report commissioned by the Office of Naval Research for the United States Navy is available here. I think the fact that even the US Navy, which would probably be biased towards wanting to find no link between whale deaths and their sonar, is releasing a report that shows a link suggests that the evidence is strong.

I haven't heard the particular Skeptoid episode about this issue, but my sense from listening to some of his other episodes and reading responses to them is that Skeptoid isn't always the best source. Also, even if navy sonar isn't the most important issue facing whales like ttguy said, that hardly precludes it from being an issue worthy of us doing something about it.

Kudos@Subliminalvibes & henjak for very good points regarding travelling through time and space. This is something that always bothers me with time travel and I'm kinda bummed I didn't actually think of it this time around until reading your posts.
Anyhoo, I also would like to know whether the Fukushima pools were actually empty or not - seems like a relevant fact and something that stuck with me from the interview.

I thought the interview with Mark Mervine was excellent. I have listened to quite a few explanations from round the world of what is going on in Fukushima and this was by far the most coherent and informative. Congratulations to all concerned.

SGU Finding Atlantis
I am Intrestred in history and i must say this
do not forget that the Trojans found the city than it was thought that the Iliad was a myth

the best theory is that Mykene Crete which was devastated by a tsunami and a volcano burst out around the time that Plato says that Atlantis
 would have fallen

google translate is not very good but is better than me to write in English when I am extremely hungry

 Thanks for a great episode
