Don’t be too quick to judge; I’m just being honest
« on: May 18, 2011, 01:15:31 PM »
I know personally, that there are a ton of times when I laugh or rage at a post and refrain from actually posting that reaction for one reason or another, usually effort related (mainly with the laughing), or not wanting to get involved in a heated topic, etc.  I know others do the same to varying degrees and that while there may be no posted reaction to a joke, people are laughing, eye-rolling, getting offended, etc. in reality.  Same with all types of posts where people in reality are reacting in some manner, but for whatever reason decide not to relate those reactions into a post.

So, here’s my idea for a game: We all decide to, for a day, refrain from refraining.  We must post our reactions when we would usually decide not to.  This does not mean that every post we read, we have to reply to, but if you have some strong reaction to it especially to the point of starting to type a reply and then abandoning it, you now have to post it for all to see.  The object of the game is to see who can go the longest without holding their tongue.  Here are my proposed rules which will, of course, be up for debate from potential participants:

1.  You must post a reaction to a post no matter how pointless or pointed it is and no matter how bad you think the idea of posting it will be.
2.  While you will not be holding back on what you respond to, you will be expected to compose your post in conformity with standard forum posting guidelines.
3.  For the as-yet-to-be-determined time frame and span, you will adjust your profile signature to include the phrase, “Don’t be too quick to judge; I’m just being honest” which will be a hyperlink to this OP.
4.  If you cannot bring yourself to post your reaction to something for any reason, you must post here that you’ve lost with a link to the thread in question.
5.  All the above rules except for rule #2 will only be enforced by the honor system to make this possible so please don’t be a dick and cheat.
6.  If this game proves popular, we may have multiple rounds and introduce variations on this theme.
7.  There must be at least 6 participants signed up before a round will be scheduled.

Let me know your thoughts about this below.  As I’ve stated, I’m completely open to changing any of the rules stated here with good reason.  If you view this and decide you don’t care; in the interest of the spirit of the game, please just post so.  No explanation needed.

Edit:

Rethought thread subjectline.  Used to be "The Betazoid for a Day Game."  New one seems more appropriate.

I don't see how this can possibly stay within the tone of the board, unless all the replies are posted to Explicit instead of the forum the replied-to post is in.
I expect to pass through this world but once;
any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now;
let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

Why can't we be honest without being off-tone?  I'm saying that we have to post against our better judgement about any number of things, not just angry, lude, or off-color reactions, though I suppose that says an awful lot about what goes on in your head to assume that  ;D.

You're going to tell me you don't even have a modest filter restricting what you will and won't post?  That's not a bad thing by the way.

     My first response would have included violent images and knives made out of plutonium going into your eyes.  Which is exactly why I always filter what I say to other people.  Most of us learn when quite young that it can be dangerous to just say the first thing that we think.

It's okay.  I mean mockign me after I make an honest apology doesn't really make me look bad.  besides MLK Jr. was a gay hating douche who didn't really accomplish anything.  it was th eviolent mob that people feared, who got shit done, and they just gave credit to MLK because they were afraid of what would happen if people realized that violence actually did work as a mechanism for change.  So quote that idiot all you like.

Right, like I said though, the point is not to stop filtering bad words, lude comments, and so on, but to convey the general idea of the reaction.  What you just said above is more the spirit of my idea than just saying, "You need to be stabbed in the eyes with plutonium knives."  Besides, the whole point is to see who could last the longest before reacting in such a way that they just could not post it publically.  Perhaps that time-span would be shorter then I anticipated though...

What did you have to apologize for?  You just made an error in assuming something.  I was the one who needed to apologize even though my intent was not to mislead, and I still did.

BTW, I'm thinking a varient on my idea but with spell and grammar checking turned off instead could be more fun and wholesome.  With every post you're selling me on  the idea.

.. but to convey the general idea of the reaction.

     Ah, I didn't grasp that from the OP.  My reaction was along the lines of "Don't fucking try to tell me how to post or I will blah blah blah (bunch of bad stuff) which ended up with stabbing your eyes with plutonium and then throwing you into a pit of rabid pigs that hadn't been fed in a week".

Yeah, I guess I was a little vague... perhaps I'll reword later on today.
