SGU Minecraft
« on: April 11, 2011, 04:58:48 PM »
Anyone interested in starting a minecraft server that we can have SGU themes on?  Rebecca and I play and would love this.  Imagine a giant Steve Novella statue or the Hall of Skepticism?

Yes, never tried multiplayer but spend way too much time in survival single player.

Notch hasn't put out offical recommended specs, but I'd guess this is pretty accurate.

CPU: 2.4Ghz Single Core CPU (2.2Ghz Dual-Core or Higher Recommended)
Memory: 4GB or Higher Recommended

I also would guess your internet connection doesn't have enough bandwidth, my friend who runs a 20 player server says his server hits upwards of 2.5-3Mbps upload rates when the server is full.

I don't meet the specs.  I am

But I'd be completely down with playing on a skeptically themed server.

This may be the thing that finally convinces me to play, much to the chagrin of the boyfriend, who has been begging me to play for months.

Yeah, the requirements are pretty serious... One blog I read recently asking for hosting help after some trouble with their provider - the numbers they gave was they use about 400GB a month and need 4 or 5 Mbps upload. Although I dont know how many players they get.

A skeptical minecrafty collaboration would awesome, though.

I'd be down for this (playing not hosting). Been playing single player for a while, messed around with multiplayer but never found a server I liked. An SGU server would solve that methinks.

If no one has the hardware there's the possibility of renting one.

If it's a matter of raising funds, I think it's important to compare pricing for renting a server and having a member build / buy one.  There's a lot of logistics with both.  The only other alternative being a mass invasion of an already existing open server, but that has it's own issues.

I can mention it on the show and see if that helps us find someone who can do it.  We could plan some cool builds :)

Considering that we may need to get a server for the forum, perhaps we could kill two birds with one stone?  I'm not sure about the traffic involved though, so perhaps that may not be feasible.  Either way, if can personally donate a teraByte sata hard drive and some other items to the cause if we go with a "build it ourselves" solution.

As a baseline cost, a quick search finds that JestServers rents Minecraft servers for about $30/month with no mods. Each gig of will accommodate ~24 players. So the pricing and player limits are as follows:

Price# Players
$30
24
$60
48
$100
72

This assumes I'm reading their pricing correctly of course.

I'd be happy to pay like a $2 a month subscription fee if it meant I get to play on an SGU only server  ;D

It could even be a way to raise a few bucks for the SGU, if you wanted to take it down that path. Not like charging $20 a month each, but just enough to cover the server with a little gravy left over.

That pricing was for Beta not Classic. Classic pricing looks like it's $2 per max player and $5 per world. So a 1 world 50 player max server would be $105/month.

They both seem sort of expensive, IMO.
