<nerd>In at least some of the continuities, Spiderman's web slingers are technology that he invents, not a power. His powers are climbing walls, general fitness (strength, flexibility, jumping ability, etc) and spidey senses.</nerd>

was he an engineer by trade or...do spiders have a knack for microengineering feats? (in the movie he's a photographer or something, but I don't know what he did before that)

I think he starts as a "gifted student" still in high school or college when he invents them.

No, hes only in high school or college when he becomes spiderman.
And he gets bitten on a school trip to the local "high radiation sciencey place" which happens to have a stray spider get in, iirc.
