Chronicle

8/10

I usually hate "recovered footage" movies, but I feel like this one was done right. It taps into the brutality of a troubled teen, and two friends that gain psychokinetic  powers. It starts small and slow, and grows into this epic battle of psychic abilities that make Jean Grey look like a street magician. Shot well, had very inventive and creative shots.

It got a bit dull in the middle, and some of the ways people reacted to situations seemed unrealistic, otherwise, top notch.

Oh man I almost walked out.  The Nerd Rage was just bad.

Eh "Different strokes"

I am glad someone else on here liked it.  I can see what parts would bother people I just was able to look past them more.

My friend Jon had the same reaction to it that I did.  The movie started out great....

Maybe I should check it out. The reviews I'm starting to mentally aggregate suggest I'd like it.

The Secret World of Arrietty - Another great Studio Ghibli film. Just as good of direction as the others, terrific and imaginative animation. It was more muted, almost retro for them, given some of the really far-out films they've done but not at all in a bad way. And Will Arnett plays her father in a very straight forward way - if you don't listen closely enough you couldn't even tell it's him.

I'll be seeing that one in...  one hour and 19 minutes.  Our second movie date since the snotling was born in Nov 2010.

I get some of my best Netflix movie suggestions from here.
If you still hold the same views now as you did in high school, you probably should reexamine those views.

Hesher
    7 out 10
The old metal head in me wanted to like this movie a lot more. It was a unique and dark story and Joseph Gordon-Levitt played it really well, even though normally I find him annoying.
A much worse movie than it should have been.  I wanted liked this movie but it just didn't go anywhere or really mean anything.  The performances were great but it felt like the makers were trying very hard to have a meaningful film with out ever saying anything meaningful. 4/10  Also, I think hesher may have been a figment of the kids imagination.

Predators
8/10
didn't even know this movie existed 'til it was mentioned in this thread.
the dialogue was more predicable than losing the lottery, and the twists weren't exactly awesome, but it had everything I wanted.
The only reason I watched it was the cast and it was much better than it should have been.  A thoroughly stupid movie that was thoroughly entertaining.  It was pointless but it didn't feel like it was supposed to have a point.  7/10

Home again. I'll give this one a 8.5/10. Would have been 8, but the excellent sound and score bump another .5 on top. I liked it, but there are better Ghibli movies out there.

I think the key difference between this and their classics* is that this is the first one in which Miyazaki's apprentice sat in the director's seat rather than him. The last Ghibli film I have personally watched with a different director was with his reluctant son -  Tales of Earthsea - and that was pretty poor.

* I think this will be considered a Studio Ghibli classic when all is said and done

August Rush - 10/10

As a movie, it falls short in many regards.  This is not a movie though.  This is a love song to the power of music.  This is a piece of art and whatever shortcomings it may have when it comes to filmmaking, it overcomes in everything else.  The love of music comes through loud and clear and if you love music... I mean truly love it, then you will love this film.  Surrender your criticism.  You will fall in love.  The only film I've ever watched that makes me cry and the only thing outside of the death of my cats to make me cry in the last 15 years.   If you love music, you will love this.  Just let it all go and remember this is not a movie; this is a love song for music.

August Rush is my... what's the opposite of guilty pleasure?

I'm proud of how much I fucking hate it. The guitar playing was pretty cool, but there's records in the world, and I can get my guitar fix from them.

Please at least downgrade it to a 9.5/10. or change the scale to a 10/11. It cannot get a perfect score.

Nope.  It honestly makes no sense to ke why this movie is more than the sum of it's very flawed parts, but to me it is.  Thr acting is not all that great, the music is merely sufficient, the story is pretty illogical, and the directing leave a lot to be desired but somehow the end product doesn't even feel like a movie to me.

So its a crappy movie but a great.....something or other.    :-\ It still doesn't make it a great movie.

Put it this way:  I think it's clear that the creators of the film set out to convey something non-literal and emotional.  Despite the objective flaws from the perspective of crafting a movie in the usual sense, they perfectly achieved their goal of relaying something powerful and moving more than any other movie I've ever seen.

I totally understand why others don't like this movie, and why it didn't do well.  I do.  I'm also not alone.  Read this review, and some of the "fresh" rated reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.  This movie is more poetry than film.

This is a moot point because everybody knows that the true greatest love song to the power of music is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The liberal hypocrisy of this board sickens me yet again.
