Just did a quick google, and learned that anachronism has a pretty specific meaning when used to talk about a film. That's obviously not the meaning I was using; I was talking about the juxtaposition of the modern world against elements of the film. Bit more meta, and probably not the most useful choice of term in this context.
Yeah, anachronistic in film would be something like denim featuring in the costumes of a movie set in Elizabethan times.

Brave: 7/10

Saw it  with my 5-year old daughter.
Lots of fun. Really well done, appropriate story. My daughter was thrilled the whole time.

Saw it today. I'd give it a similar rating, maybe even a tiny bit better. After seeing the mixed reviews for it, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was one of the funnier Pixar films.

Would that work? I always thought "anachronism" was specific to things out of place in a sense of old or out-dated. Like someone wearing a poodle skirt in 2012. Does it work the other way too?

Yup, works the other way too.  Reference "medieval" roleplaying games for discussion of the topic from that angle.

Huh? I don't understand this sentence.

I sloppily used "reference" as a verb, as in "go look up", and then put "medieval" in quotes because fantasy RPGS aren't set in anything even close to actual medieval times.

But it is a topic that comes up a lot in those circles.

Oh, okay! Gothcha. But does that serve as evidence? I don't think it's accurate to call a space laser in ancient Japan an "anachronism."

Maybe or maybe not, but things like gender equity in (quasi-)mediaval Europe, or naming your character "Neo" and having it wear a leather coat and sunglasses...  That's called "anachronistic" in any gaming circles.  Inserting obvious modern references into ostensibly historical times.

Wait, isn't that exactly what and anachronism is?

I guess I'm probably thinking too literally, since in reality something can only be an anachronism in the sense that I'm referring to. In fiction, though, and with the benefit of hindsight, I suppose something can be anachronistic in the opposite sense from the usual. Looking at the similar term "anatopism" convinces me that "anachronism" just means "out of time," similar to anatopism meaning "out of place." It's just confusing, since time is linear....if that makes any sense.

"The Nazi Officer's Wife," which is as dull as it sounds. It's a documentary about how the Nazis were bad. Really bad. We turned it off half an hour in. I already know Nazis are bad.
If you still hold the same views now as you did in high school, you probably should reexamine those views.

Yes, but did you know they are really bad?

Watched Fist of Legend (Jet Li, dubbed).  With a Chinese friend.  We had sooooo much fun, doing commentary the way good friends do over slightly silly movies.  Fun action, childish plot, loved it.

Beetlejuice  7 out of 10

It's pretty dated and Alex Baldwin looks way different young but still pretty creative. I thought it was weird that every time they spell beetlejuice in the movie, they spell it Betelgeuse but on the title use beetlejuice?

Brave 6 / 10

Decent kids' movie, but not at all the female empowerment kids movie it advertised itself as.
