Ooo, good point.  I've got a bad 3D likeness of Jerry Seinfeld if you need it.  I know that sounds funny but I actually do :)

Okay, send that to me, it's hard finding free models of recognizable faces that I can work on
For a scale/detail test, I downloaded the voxelization and schematic conversion programs and after much hassle got them working...

I started with this model I was able to download for free, converted it

into this imported with mcedit

That's just about at max height to give you a sense of the level of detail we can get. It would be good to see if an actual face is more or less recognizable after the process

I've now completed the first stage of my Centre For Skeptical Enquiry. Come and visit! There's some free stuff amongst the first set of exhibits. It's easy to find, right next to point 0,0 and is now connected to my aerial causeway.

The CSE is totally sweet.

Also, I just sent Random a bad 3D model of Seinfeld.  Looking forward to screen shots!

Sometime this week I'm going to do a new server tour video.  Please post coordinates to builds you want me to include.  Also please put:

Server Tour Coords

In front of them so I can find them easily.

One more thing -- we could put Mount Skeptmore (sounds like what skeptical couples do behind closed doors) in a bit of a canyon making it Skeptic Gorge (What homeopaths that can't spell gouge want to do) and giving us more resolution.  In fact, we could lower the landscape in an area and smooth the transition so it doesn't look too goofy.

So I did the test with the model LC sent me, I don't think the results were all that great

Anyone see Jerry Seinfeld in that?
for reference here's the model I started with

Thoughts anyone?
Digging into the ground a bit might help, but I can't figure out how to get the software to scale the model to something other than the default right now (which is 64 blocks I think)

I don't see Jerry, but it does give a really cool impression of a head.  The truth is the Minecraft doesn't provide the granularity required for highly nuanced models. None the less, it's impressive.

I like laying blocks out, counting (which I usually do very badly) and trying to imagine what my efforts will end up looking like. I'm a little suspicious of Minecraft efforts that are derived from data imports and map edit work. At some point you gotta ask yourself if you're not better firing up Blender, or 3DS Max.

Fantastic!

Say, LC

Any chance we could have an updated map image? I'm planning on a personal tour, and having a fresh view of the world will would be great. Plus I'm planning my next project and a new map will help me decided where to start building...

I don't mind (and I use) 3d models to build a layout plan. I prefer to build it by hand though. It's not nearly as impressive as people who conceive of and execute something spectacular but it's the best I'm going to do outside of a nice tower.

I wouldn't have been able to make this otherwise.

Agreed. This was just a scale test though, to see if a face was recognizable at the level of detail one can get out of minecraft.

Yep, that's what I was thinking.
Colour can be used to give depth effects and artists have been doing this for thousands of years.
Anyone have a 64x64 cross stitch pattern for Sagan?  :P
(should be easy to make the plan in a graphics program by limiting the number of colors?)

I'm going to make a test-head at "my" place, dunno when its going to be done but i've counted that i need 1800 blocks for it, that would be 50 times 36. i just hope people can see who it is :)

That's motivated me to get my act together and build my football stadium.

I've done about 85/90% of the pitch, but I haven't even started work on the grand stand.

Does any one know if it is possible to move a mob spawn crate?

If it is I think I have just worked out how I am going to get players on the field ;)

With a good bow I should be able to keep it to 22 players on the pitch
