I'm quite tempted by the let's play idea. XD I was wanting to do one with a group in the past, but it never really went anywhere. I've been really trying to write recently. Just started a novel, and it's very time consuming. I don't really have much time for much else... I haven't even been getting on ragnarok much... >.>

I've got you beat:  I'm writing five novels - but I've been working on them in one form or another for twenty years.  So yeah, time consuming (seems every spare moment goes into this;  these things have stolen my dreams!  Or they are my dreams.  Something).

I'd be potentially interested in any group projects in which we are on at the same time working on it. What I enjoyed about minecraft the most is the social aspect of it.

Cool, same here. Consider yourself on the list for the LP!  I would like to have at least one other person recording so we get multiple perspectives, especially if we play on teams. Of course if everyone is recording that would be great!  We're also going to have to get voice working and do some testing to see what works.  I'm going to start a separate thread about it soon, so we can work out the logistics.

Well I do have fraps, however if we are both going to record, then I recommend that we use the same texture pack. You know what would be interesting? Having a war. We could have two teams battle each other, and use creepers, etc as our minions/weapons. This of course means that we would need the protection from them gone (it's pretty much just cheating anyways.) There's friendly fire in this game isn't there? I would recommend this as a side project to the main LP though.

Going back to the texture packs... I like painterly. Would you be interested in making a custom pack? Or do you want me to do it? I would prefer something not too different from the original minecraft textures. I find a lot of the textures to be confusing in figuring out what they are, and it's quite annoying as well when watching LPs. I don't want to put viewers off just because the textures are so different that you can't tell whats what. It's too confusing. But nonetheless I do still like the custom textures.

I'm particularly interested in hearing from the peeps that have stopped playing - what do we need to do to lure you back?
A bit busy IRL.  Don't worry, this server has been in the back of my mind most of the time.  I'll be playing again soon.

A few points:

1.  I like the idea of one big map.  The only big thing I've really built is the SGU University Tesseract, which should be relatively easy to copy since it's basically a cube.  However, I'm willing to part with it and move on to new things if necessary.

2.  If we have fewer maps, get rid of the portal system.

3.  The LP idea sounds awesome.  It would be tough to organize and I'm not sure if I could consistently commit to playing it, but I'm interested!  We could even do a shorter map.  Some only take a half hour or so.

Scattered thoughts-

In my experience the mismatched edges from copy and paste don't ever get smoothed out. If you're lucky the most active players go find their personal work and fix the edges but ultimately the world looks like crap. If people care then it just falls to mods to work on it for a ridiculous number of hours.

When I look to do something with the nether it's always a transport hub that doesn't really take off. Got a real big one carved in the ceiling on one server but it was barely populated with portals before we wiped that map. I like the materials but get all I'm going to bother using quickly, thanks to ghasts being a bit unmanageable after awhile.

Having a bunch of builds on one map using the native terrain does feel good but I've seen some other servers try to encourage players to do that on fresh maps but I think it really takes a perfect storm of numerous motivated players.

So then the reasons I left. First of all I never saw more than one other person online for the month I messed around here. Second I started making things using redpower and industrialcraft, and then on a tekkit server. After that I had 12 hour nightshifts for about a month and a half that really threw off my sense of time and lately I haven't been feeling any motivation to minecraft, though I sometimes think about other servers where I knew lots of people.

Do we keep this new world indefinitely?  Or do we keep it for a time, then move a selection of builds into the museum and start fresh?  Maybe we could commit to keeping the core world for six months or even a year before we start fresh; once or twice a year we would have to do some housekeeping, moving stuff into the museum etc.  Of course we could copy stuff to the museum when the builder says it is finished, that way it doesn't need to be done all at once.

I would really, really, really like to have one main world for a long period of time. I'm not on the server much, even when I have the time to play so it takes me a while to get anything major built. The last few worlds we've had I've ended up with some big ideas I'd like to do, but then an update happens and there's talk of a new world and I lose motivation.

We could do one of Vech's Race for the wool maps, though we would have to get at least four people to do it right IMO.  For the challenge map LP I was thinking of starting easy with Sunburn Islands, then move on to something more difficult.

I usually use a high res photo-realism texture pack.  I know some people hate those, in part because they are often inconsistent in quality and theme.  I would be willing to use a different one for this though, but I would have trouble going back to a 16x16 texture.  I've never been a fan of the low res textures of vanilla minecraft. It would have to be at least 32 x 32.

So are we going to do a regular random seed no cheats vanilla LP? Or are we just doing challenge maps? Also I still like my war idea, but as you have said, we would need plenty of people. Ive even got a decent texture pack (click) for it. :P Although I would prefer to modify it a bit first, as it's just a bit too dull for my tastes.

Also, for some reason I can't ever get some of the more hi res packs to load, so we will have to be careful with which one we get...

Does anyone else have an opinion?  I'm particularly interested in hearing from the peeps that have stopped playing - what do we need to do to lure you back?

I'm just not participating in the SGU MC Server any more, because I'm frankly not really active with the SGUF any more.  I've grown tired of a lot of negative aspects of the community, and am not investing as much time in it.  Beyond that, in terms of the MC server, I came, I saw, I conquered.  After a haitus, I came back, and it was a half-dozen different worlds, I couldn't find anything, and nobody was online the dozen-odd times I got on.  So I kinda quit checking.

I'm sorry you're having a negative experience here.  I pretty much stay in the games forum - I've learned to avoid forums in general as they tend to be full of drama.  So far I haven't seen that here - but as I said, I've stayed in the games sub-forum.

I don't really want to do an LP of a random seed.  I was thinking just challenge maps.  It doesn't have to be a CTM map;  it could be an adventure map, whatever.

The texture pack link you posted is broken.  Do you know why high rest packs don't work for you?  Is it too much for your system?  Did you use MCpatcher or optifine?

Yeah, I don't think I've been any of the other forums in months . . . OK, maybe I check Explicit occasionally . . .

Seriously though, I've kind of taken a step back from a lot of organized skeptic stuff with a few exceptions. Anyway, I don't see why that should be a deterrent for the MC server, and if we consolidate maybe it will invigorate things again.

Sorry about the texture link. I'll put it in this:

What sort of adventure maps were you wanting to do?

That texture pack is nice, but I think it would cause more confusion than any pack I use - especially if we do a CTM map;  how are we supposed to know which wool we've got?  I know, mouse-over and a name pops up, but still.  I think it would be disorienting, unless a particular map were built with that pack in mind.  Cool pack though.

I've been using the LB photo-realism RPG pack, here:

http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/127377-16x-32x-64x-128x-256x12-lb-photo-realism-124-update-3292012/

Do you have a 64 bit version of Java?  In the first post they mention that windows automatically downloads the 32 bit version of java, even if you have a 64 bit system.  That may be your problem - they outline how to get the 64 bit version in the link above.  They also recoment increasing the java heap size (doubling actually).  I don't know if that would help, but it's worth a try.  It's one thing if you don't like the high res packs, but it sucks if you want to use them but can't.  Hopefully this helps.

While there are 16x16 versions of the original LB photo-realism pack, the lowest res of the RPG pack is 64x64.

If none of this works we can keep looking for a texture pack that works for both of us.  As to the map, as I posted above I would like to start off with Sunburn Islands (it's part of Vechs' super-hostile series).  If you want to do the war thing one of his race-for-the-wool maps would be cool - they are full on pvp, tnt cannons and all.
