I've completed my borehole to the west of the spawn castle on Gliese581d.

You can leap from the top all the way to the bottom, which is one block above bedrock:

Just be careful where you jump, as there are a few obstacles on the way down.

The tower in the center is not yet finished, nor are all of the rooms at the base of the borehole.  I have finished the library though:

Ok, played around with WorldEdit while online. I can make building zoning guides from wool!

This is 40m x 40m but should scale up.
I also cloned the floating island a few times and yup, works fine.

As a thought we can also put a chest of building materials into each area set aside for for people to build something as a bit of competition.

okay, I think I need to get word edit.  I've used it before, but it's been a while and my version stopped working months ago.  I can make the city offline and then send you the map (as soon as I figure out how to do that).

When you copy from one map to another you don't need to copy whole chunks do you?  I think it might be easier to build this with a flat map, but those suck in anything but peaceful (slime orgy).

In WorldEdit there is an option to save a selected area as a file. I can then load that file into a world if you send it to me.
We are running 1.2.5 everything now and there is a matching build of WorldEdit to suit. I've used it online and it works fine.

http://build.sk89q.com/job/WorldEdit/1135/ is the version running on the server at the moment.
(Build #1135-c580d6e (30-Mar-2012 16:21:36)) AFAIK That's version 5.3 of WorldEdit

This is a server mod so you need to be running your own server to use it. There possibly are client tools for making what is referred to as 'schematics' although I don't know if they are up to date with 1.2 of Minecraft. I can load schematics using WorldEdit.

I can set up your permissions in multiplayer so you can use it although this wouldn't occur for another 12 hours as I work and other stuff to sort out in the mean time. If i get a chance I'll have a look tonight at the permissions system we are using and work out how to get a player to have access to WorldEdit  whilst online (..without just using full op status. Full op status is easy however I'd rather be online too  and have full backups done first in case things go horribly wrong)

yeah, full backups and you online at the same time is a good idea.  I think what I'll do is survey an area and place markers at the four corners of the area I need flattened.  After that I should be able to lay it out in a pretty straight forward manner.

This is assuming I build it near the spawn village on Gliese581g.  If it is going to on a floating island near the others, I'm not sure.  Has a location been selected yet?  I would like this to be built on one of the permanent worlds.

Yep, that'd be cool. I'd suggest the latest world, Nemoris Crux,  as it is fully 1.2 compatible and has all creatures and biomes. If you want to explore and put up some say 4 high columns  of dirt with a torch on top like survey pegs that would be great. When changing large areas the method uses opposite corners of rectangular/square areas to select a region so survey points are needed.

Is it possible we could get a current map of Nemoris?

Is it possible we could get a current map of Nemoris?

I tried this last week and my mapping software failed due to the major geometry changes in 1.2. :(
I had a quick look and couldn't find any software that supported MC 1.2.  :( :(
If you have a moment please have another look around and see if I missed anything and if so post up the link and I'll get the map made.

I'm thinking of using the swamp biome to the north of the area the test squares were placed (on NemorisCrux).  It seems to be pretty large and it won't require any cool mountains to be leveled.  I'm outlining it with dirt blocks.  I'll place pillars at the four corners when it's done.

All I really need is that area filled with dirt from sea level up to the level of the dirt block outline.  If you want to make a donation of some chests of dirt/stone bricks/netherbrick/glass panes for the streets and perimeter that would be awesome :)  Also, it would be cool if the top layer of dirt was grass. Also, thanks!

I just hope other players want to build here when it's done.

OK that sounds doable. i think the grass grows automatically over the dirt, given enough time.

I have the area outlined - I need all of the air blocks from sea level up to 71 turned into dirt.  A few hills will stick up above, but that's okay as they will seed in the grass.  If the hills are in the park area I'll incorporate them into the design.  Here are the coordinates of the four corners:

___________ N

-379___________________ -29
71_____________________ 71
-378___________________ -378

W______________________ E

-379___________________ -29
71_____________________ 71
-27____________________ -27

____________ S

That's about 350 blocks on a side, which is 10 more than I need which should make it easier for me to blend the edge in with the landscape.  My first job will be to light everything up with a torch grid so that I can work safely through the night.  I will be building a giant sequoia in the very center of the park.  There will be a room inside the base of the tree in which will be the portal - which will be the only way in or out of the city.  I'll post reminders not to remove anything.  I'll also build a petition board where players can ask Loki for materials to build things.  Most of the city should be visible from the giant sequoia, though of course the top will be too high to see the ground - there will be small observation platforms on lower branches.

I would also like to ask Loki if I could have several stacks of redwood/rainforest logs - a full double chest even, as that sequoia is going to take a lot and I really don't want to chop down the rainforest :)

No materials used in the city will be taken out into the rest of the map.
