TotalBiscuit reviewed it on the YouTubes and was a bit disappointed by the gameplay. It appears that you can only choose 2 weapons at a time a la COD, which really, really sucks for a game like Duke Nukem because there starts to become little reason to carry cool but not terribly useful stuff like the shrink ray around. Hopefully the developers fix that before it launches but that's actually a fairly big issue it looks like. Otherwise, the demo anyway looks like the game's pretty well captured the original style of 3D for better or for worse, and there will probably be worse FPSes to get released this year.

Talk about damning with faint praise. The last thing I want to play is another mediocre FPS. Could the game actually be worth the hype, or is it just the novelty of a game being in production for 15 years?

DN 3D is still the best FPS ever, IMO. If this one is half as good, it will easily beat the competition.

It looks okay enough, but there's nothing really groundbreaking there and apparently the devs weren't willing to go "old school" on a couple things which would have really made a difference. It doesn't look like it's going to be totally awful, which in and of itself is quite the feat for a game which has been vaporware for 15 freaking years, but I think asking it to be groundbreaking the way 3D was is asking a bit much.

That would be unfortunate indeed. Looks like all everybody wants in a FPS these days is realism and nice FX (that only run decently on high-end machines, btw). Me I want humour and a good storyline, not to mention a challenge that goes beyond merely being fast with your controls.

Well, personally I would not expect even an idealized, Platonic Duke Nukem Forever to be about much more than button-mashing. In fact, one of the allures of the game is that it's a bit thought-*less* compared to, say, CoD or even GoW. Where those games can force you to use tactics and cunning to survive, I personally kind of want a DN game wherein I can run through, blow pig cops up by the zillions, use all the zany weapons which are in the game when I feel like it, and be amused by the juvenile humor. Sadly, I think the biggest problem with DNF is that the same game came out 5 years ago or whatever and it was called Serious Sam.

Saw a commercial for this - the graphics look horrible.

No, I've never heard about a lot of games, I try not to go after them because I'm quite prone to addiction. Looks very interesting, but it's not FPS, wiki describes it as "a third-person shooter video game with real-time strategy elements", and I'm not familiar with both kinds of games (I'm either FPS or Civ, or yet something silly like Worms Armageddon). It has a great pro: 10 years old, will run smoothly even on a modest PC. Probably very cheap too, if not free (abandonware). Might take a look, I need something to distract me from my usual paranoia, thank you.  :)

I started playing computer games on a TRS80 (~1.5 MHz 8-bit processor, monochromatic, 128x48 resolution, 48KB RAM) and had lots of fun.

Giants is fun. There are even directions on how to unlock the topless characters by deleting a single file.

The "third person" aspect basically means your POV is from slightly behind the character instead of through their eyes. The strategy elements are limited in the single person game, but there are a few sections where you build a "Base". If you're vaguely familiar with things like Starcraft imagine something similar to the base building, but with bawdy jokes and a pub for the workers being critical aspects of the game. There are some "twitch shooting" aspects of the game in various places. Occasionally using some of the cheats, specifically to avoid being eaten by piranha in the water, will make the game go faster. It's also possible to just unlock the cut scenes and watch the story unfold, but there are some in-game comments that you miss.

So yeah, the game's a fuckton of fun, but by no emans the best out there. I should try multiplayer some day, but I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually.
