The problem with Weird Al is that he has so much more musical range and career longevity than most the artists he parodies. The tracks become perplexing when the original artists fade into obscurity.

I want to see a CD box set featuring the original songs paired with the Weird Al Parodies, so future generations can better appreciate his genius by placing it in context.

So true.  My playlist is usually (whenever I'm not listening to an audiobook) every recorded Weird Al track, along with some concert recordings I tracked down, on shuffle.  Some of the sources are pretty obscure these days (Rico Suave?), but the parodies carry charms of their own divorced from their sources.

Also - the finest parody of them all is the Bohemian Rhapsody polka.  That is all.

Yeah, you should try listening to some of Al's early stuff from the 80's after being born in '91. BTW, I figured this statistic myself once, and it holds for everything up to his most recent album or two, more of Al's music is original than parody. And I think that still holds if you count the polka medleys as parody.

When I got into Weird Al's really old stuff, there were a lot of songs that I didn't even know were parodies. Most of the time if I heard a parody that I liked and thought to check the original, I would be disappointed. Sometimes the juxtaposition is just plain hilarious.

JIMMY WEBB - RICHARD HARRIS - MacArthur Park

vs

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Jurassic Park

I didn't even know this song was a parody until I heard the original on the radio once:

Genius.

Weird Al praodies are so well done that I often end up confusing the original song with the parody.

"It's all About the Pentiums," "Whatever You Like," "The Saga Begins," and now probably this song too.

I actually prefer the style parodies to the song parodies.  Dog Eat Dog, Dare to be Stupid, Bob, Genius in France, etc.

With Dare to be Stupid, Al out-Devoed Devo.

Now you may find it inconcievable or at the very least a bit unlikely that the relative position of the planets and the stars could have special deep significance or meaning that exclusively applies to only you, but let me give you my assurance that these forecasts and predictions are all based on solid scientific documented evidence and you would have to be some kind of moron not to realize that every single one of them is absolutely true; where was I?

My wife loves eBay from Poodle Hat.

My favourite recent Al time was driving across southern California with the recent 2-disc greatest hits collection in the rental car.  My (at the time) 7 month old niece was fussing the whole time, except when Al was playing.  Then she'd sleep.
