End of Space Shuttle program
« on: Jun 29, 2011, 06:19:44 AM »
Last launch is Atlantis on Friday July 8th. I just found out this morning that I got tickets to be on Kennedy Space Center for the launch. I'm excited about seeing it, but I think it's going to be a little emotional for me too. The shuttle program represents a lot to me...joy, tragedy, wonderment. Just wondering if anyone else felt the same way.

yes, it is sad to see it go. I don't like the idea of the US not having one.  >:(

The US will be just one more nation hitching rides from the Russians.

If you still hold the same views now as you did in high school, you probably should reexamine those views.

Only 30% chance that I will see the launch today, but I'm leaving to drive up to the Cape now. I don't want to be that a..hole who had the opportunity to see the last shuttle launch from Kennedy Space Center and didn't go because I thought the weather would be bad.

Sucks normally I can see the launch from my front yard but it was too cloudy.

Well that's it...got a great view of Atlantis as it blasted off. I remember the first Shuttle launch in 1981 and now it's over. I'm actually pretty bummed right now.

Atlantis lands in Florida tomorrow morning at 5:56 AM EDT.

I don't know if this is new or not but you can monitor the shuttle's flight using Google Earth, updated with data from Mission Control:

BBC's Horizon documentary on the Shuttle is very good!
Made me all sad and happy.

Walked out of my hotel in Tampa this morning and looked south. Saw a bright light hauling ass from west to east and smiled. Didn't hear the sonic booms (too far away) but it was good to see it part of the way home.

Sad day in American history.
common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

this is a good day.  135 missions and 2 catastrophes is a completely unacceptable statistic.

I'm sure this is both clever and hysterical, but I don't get it.
