The Great Courses
« on: Jul 28, 2011, 12:44:11 PM »
I got a mailer today from something called "The Great Courses" (not sure how they got my name but...).  Has anyone any experience with these DVD courses?

Any good for layperson? Highly dubious?

If I want to read a testimonial, I'd rather have it from one of you guys!

Here's the one that Dr. Novella did.
Alternatively, you can get it here or here.

I've only taken the course by him, so I can't really speak to any of the others, but I found this particular course to be highly informative. I would definitely recommend it.

I've gotten about a dozen of these over the years. They're usually pretty good, especially if you follow the course guide. Great for a long commute.

Now, my library has many of them, and I check them out all the time. Right now, I'm listening to "The History of Jazz."
If you still hold the same views now as you did in high school, you probably should reexamine those views.

I downloaded one on the History of Western Civilization and listened to the first 10 1/2 lectures last night while out walking. Goodstuffs!

Better make sure we actually give them the mp3s, though, because if we just give them a gift certificate they'll buy this:

if you don't want to torrent them, you could see if your local library has any in the audiobook section.

IMO, The Teaching Company is much better than The Modern Scholar.
