HD and Remastered TNG!

Rumours of a possible high-definition transfer for Star Trek: The Next Generation have been rife on the internet ever since the Original Series was remastered in 2006. That project saw all 80 classic episodes brought firmly into the 21st century with all new special effects and a stunning remastering of the original film.

Star Trek fans have been asking if the same treatment will be given to The Next Generation, and recent rumblings from CBS Paramount confirm that Captain Picard and crew are about to join the original crew in glorious high-definition.

 THE STORY SO FAR...
The Digital Bits site reported back in July that sources at Comic Con had confirmed CBS were working on a high-definition transfer for The Next Generation and that 4 'test episodes' were being worked on with the aim of releasing a 'sampler blu ray' sometime in 2011.

On September 2, LeVar Burton, TNG's Lt. Cmdr. Geordi La Forge, tweeted that he had stopped by CBS Paramount Television City to 'see how the TNG conversion to HD for Blue Ray was coming along...' and followed up his tweet with the hashtag #mindblown.

Now, the Digital Bits has confirmed through sources at CBS Paramount which episodes will be featured on the blu-ray sampler disc:
'The disc will include FOUR episodes, two of which will include Encounter at Farpoint, Parts 1 and 2. We're told that the other two should be The Inner Light and Sins of the Father...'

Maybe they'll remaster-away that annoying whistling that Patrick Stewart very frequently, presumably unintentionally, does. That really irritated me.
Dr Johnson, they said: “we are delighted to find that you’ve not included any indecent or obscene words in your dictionary.”
“Ladies, said dr Johnson, “I can congratulate you on being able to look them up.”

Motherf***er!  Just saw news about the fact Amazon now has Season 1 available for pre-order.  Went there to check it out and saw this:

I understood the high price point when TNG first came to DVD as TV shows on DVD was a new thing and most sets were pretty expensive, but now?!  There's no possible justification for it beyond assuming that Trek fans will pay anything for more stuff.  Sorry, I never bought it on DVD as I wasn't willing to shell out over $1000 for it and I'm not doing it now.  God this pisses me off!

This is annoying. Although I missed the series first time around, I've been enjoying replays on TV, and I've been avoiding buying the DVDs in anticipation of this set. It looks like I'll have to spend my money on something else (unless the price falls days after release, after having gouged the hardcore fans).

...and five minutes cut from every episode to make room for more commercials. No thanks, I think I'll watch the original Original Series with its crappy special effects instead.

If you can hold off a year or two, you'll probably get a very reasonable price.  Have patience.  Star Trek will still be there.

Besides, if you start now, by time they're all released, there will be a new media format anyway....

Not so sure about the price dropping.  I followed that strategy with the DVDs and they never dropped below $80 until they were impossible to find.  Theres an FYE near me that has the complete series box set and it's still something like $600.

I just can't imagine these things selling like Paramount hopes.

The new generations of sci fi nerds don't give a sh#t about Star Trek, unless it's starring hot young actors.

I don't really think the DVDs sold well either.  Seems they don't care unfortunately.  Let's face it though; given the $129.99 MSRP, it's doubtful the price will drop to $40 anytime soon, which is about my upper limit price point for TV seasons.

Then again, maybe I'm wrong.  Just checked Amazon and they've already reduced the price to $78.86.  Seems Amazon understands the stupidity of a $130 price point at least.

If there wasn't a danger of Ms. Xptical going into a coma from pure boredom, I'd have downloaded them this weekend.  I'd love to see TNG in 720p or 1080p, but I'm not going to pay more than a few bucks per *good* episode.  If the seasons were priced at $50 or so, in digital download form, I'd consider it.

I may have to get this for my Trekkie wife.
If you still hold the same views now as you did in high school, you probably should reexamine those views.

Yeah but not the remastered HD versions I'd wager, and you wouldn't be getting any extras either.  Speaking of which, they'd better pack in the extras with a price point like this.
