Dating Silk By Capillary Electrophoresis Mass Spectrometry

Quote
A new capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry (CE-MS) technique is introduced for age estimation of silk textiles based on amino acid racemization rates. With an L to D conversion half-life of ~2,500 years for silk (B. mori) aspartic acid, the technique is capable of dating silk textiles ranging in age from several decades to a few-thousand-years-old. Analysis required only ~100 µg or less of silk fiber. Except for a 2-hour acid hydrolysis at 110 °C, no other sample preparation is required. The CE-MS analysis takes ~20 minutes, consumes only nanoliters of the amino acid mixture, and provides both amino acid composition profiles as well as D/L ratios for ~11 amino acids.

Strange Vent-Fellows: Chemosynthetic Shrimp, Tubeworms Together for First Time at Hydrothermal Vent

Quote
Ocean explorers on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer observed two species of marine life scientists believe have never before been seen together at a hydrothermal vent -- chemosynthetic shrimp and tubeworms. They also observed the first known live tubeworms ever seen at a hydrothermal vent in Atlantic waters.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS STATEMENT ON HPV VACCINE
By: O Marion Burton, MD, FAAP, president, American Academy of Pediatrics

“The American Academy of Pediatrics would like to correct false statements made in the Republican
presidential campaign that HPV vaccine is dangerous and can cause mental retardation. There is absolutely no
scientific validity to this statement. Since the vaccine has been introduced, more than 35 million doses have
been administered, and it has an excellent safety record.

“The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American
Academy of Family Physicians all recommend that girls receive HPV vaccine around age 11 or 12. That’s
because this is the age at which the vaccine produces the best immune response in the body, and because it’s
important to protect girls well before the onset of sexual activity. In the U.S., about 6 million people, including
teens, become infected with HPV each year, and 4,000 women die from cervical cancer. This is a life-saving
vaccine that can protect girls from cervical cancer.

Oldest Pub in Scotland?

Quote
Experts believe that 4600 years ago, thirsty natives may have been enjoying a pie and pint at Jarlshof in Shetland.

They say the layout of the stone settlement near Sumburgh Head suggests it may be the oldest pub ever found in Britain.

And a dozen or so quernstones - for grinding barley - indicate it may have served as both a drinking den and a bakery.
common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

This site looks like Hobbittown. I almost expected to see Bilbo in front of a door.

Humourous rather than interesting, so I'll put it in spoilers.

Where is the Apollo 10 Lunar capsule? It’s somewhere out there — orbiting the Sun — and there’s a new initiative to try and find it!
