what guitar should I buy

moj:
My first electric was an Ibanez and while I loved it, the locking tremolo system was such a pain the ass to deal with. It would take days after changing strings before it would hold a tune.  I want to love Ovation, they sound great but if you get one, get one with a normal back! Those weird curved plastic backs are so annoying if you ever play sitting down. It won’t sit on your knee like a normal guitar.  Sorry to say I’m out of the loop on what to recommend. I would have said a Gibson les paul, but those Grestchs look pretty sweet to.

superdave:
those gretschs are mighty perdy

I've actually installed Gretsch pickups in my Les Paul, because I'm not in a position to buy another guitar, but wanted more of a Gretsch sound.

The Gretsch equiv of a Les Paul is unbelievably heavy, that's why I've recommended a hollowbody.

By the way, if you think I'm biased to the Gretsch, my favourite guitar is actually a Mosrite.
Beautiful guitars, but have very narrow necks and don't suit everyone.
Hallmark make excellent copies, but with more traditional spaced strings.
The guy who owns the company actually used to work for Mosrite USA in the golden age.

I bought some parts for another guitar that I have and they're excellent spec.

I've owned a Satriani model Ibanez.
Nice to play, boring to hear and a mongrel to setup.
Also, floyd rose doesn't stay in tune that much better than a Bigsby, Mosrite, Jazzmaster, Mustang or even cheap stamped metal Teisco tremolo's. But it does stay in tune better than the standard Stratocaster tremolo (all of the above do).

superdave:
my current guitar has a floyd rose licensed tremelo, I assume a real floyd rose stays in tune better but mine stays in tune ok.  The thing is a hassle though.  I dont change strings as often as i should because of it and i tend not to use the tremelo much in my playing anyway.

  Two questions about the Gretsch.

1)  How does it sound with the gain turned up (way up, 11 up)

2) I was willing to spend about a grand, how does the 600 dollar gretsch compare to other guitars at the 1000 dollar price level and is it worth getting a more expensive gretsch
