Yeah, I've heard really great things about The Wire. Is it as "real" as Six Feet Under? As in, there really aren't any cliches, random stuff just happens, things that happen don't have to tie in to other things? That was what drew me in to that show. ASoIaF/GoT as well.

The Shield is one of my favorite shows of all time. Probably my favorite in the drama category. Not the most real, but man was that a fantastic show.

Also had a phenomenal ending. Nothing as satisfying as Six Feet Under, but still damned satisfying.

Watch the whole series, there may be a few weak moments in the show, but they are few and far between.
Does it get better after the piolet?

Oh yeah. I enjoyed the pilot, but I know what you mean.

The events of the pilot really set the tone for the series, and guide the plot of the overarching story, but they didn't have their bearings straight with the characters and the directing style. They definitely improved past the pilot.

It was one of FXs first shows (if not first) and I think they probably produced the pilot, waited a while for it to get picked up, and then created the rest of the episodes. So it's one of those shows whose pilot feels different from everything else.

ETA: Just checked. It was their first show. Although I can't confirm what I said about it being filmed well before the rest of the season. Based on the feel I'd guess that to be the case, though.

Doctor Who (Absolutely the best, even at its worst. You can only discuss WHO in relative terms against itself).
Boss (Not even on the list. probable the best new show. grammer is amazing).
Boardwalk Empire (Starting to become very predictable).
GoT (Season 2 is taking forever).
Torchwood (last season was good, though flawed - but good).

The Wire is probably the best 'cop' show ever made for tv. The shield comes in second. Both had good endings, even if they were hard to accept.

I'm still the only one to vote for Treme? Weird.

I really like Treme, it's just not in my top 5. I don't think there's enough of a point or enough of a distinctive plot arch. Interesting and entertaining things happen to these great characters, but there's no real motivation driving the story forward. I'm probably wrong, and maybe it's too subtle for me, but that's how I see it.

It's one of the points of the series that there is no proper story or plot arch, just great, well-written characters coping with their lives. And amazing music. The whole thing just flows. It's like a fictional documentary, if that makes sense at all, just following life in NOLA.
There's, another example. See, here I'm now sitting by myself, uh, er, talking to myself. That's, that's chaos.

I'm not a fan of an tv show, book, or film that has a major flaw that has to be defended by saying, "No, that flaw is the point!  If you don't like the fact that it has this major flaw your just not sophisticated enough to get it!"

I don't think you can call an intentional feature a flaw. It's a character-driven series, not a plot-driven one. Some people like this, some don't. I do.
