After watching seasons 1-4 in the last month, I can honestly say that this season blew way more chunks than usual.  Though after the way Laguerta got the other Lt. removed in season 2 I will say I was astonished they just went on to pretend that she didn't really go to a place that low.  That, to me, was the most shocking revelation of season 2 IMO and then she just moved onto being a nice lady who occasionally does some slightly underhanded political shit but is generally good.  This seasons returned her to that negative place and it was welcome.

Laguerta is the dumbest cop in the history of TV, not counting comedies about stupid cops. It's amazing to me she ever made it onto the force in the first place, much less rose in the ranks. I'm pretty sure she's fucked up every policing decision she's made in the show in one way or another. But somehow she always gets away with it.

She should've died in season 1. She's easily the worst character. The only time her actions make any sense at all is when she's being a cold-hearted selfish bitch.

Sorry, apparently I needed to rant about her and you gave me an excuse.  :P

I've been reading the books and oddly enough, the author agrees with you.  He painted her as absolutely incompetant in the first book (basically mirred the firat season btw) and killed her off at the end.   The series is drastically different from the show though, even when it has similar plots and I think the extra time LaGuerta gets in the show allows her to be more sympathetic and fully fleshed out and sorta allows her a bit of redemption.

Eh, the show needed a antagonist that the audience to hate when they do the storyline focusing on cops.

She can be that, but she and Matthews really go back and forth on the bad cop thing; each with their moments of genuine goodness.  Btw, I wasn't saying the show was worse.  In the book she was really two dimensional, wheras the show painted her as a more real person.
