Really enjoyed this episode.  Jeremy Beahan's sermon was quite moving.

There are dueling reality checks!!

http://www.publicrealityradio.org/programs/realitycheck

Yeah, I heard Dave mention that on a (fairly) recent episode.  I'm a little gobsmacked, to be honest.....

The original (and similarly-themed) "the Reality Check" podcast (put out by guys close to where I live) has been around for at LEAST 3 years now.

Did Dave just not check to see if the title was taken already?  Or was he aware of the already-existing podcast and just think that the "the" in the other podcast was sufficient to differentiate? :)

Damn reality check stealing bastards! The real reality check:

The Beahan interview left me feeling like Beahan seems to jump from belief system to belief system, each time deciding this one is the truth, gets bored/frustrated by internal contradictions/inconsistencies and finds another. Skepticism/atheism has 'em too. However much I thought Beahan came across as smart and earnest, I did wonder if 3 years from now he'll be a hindu or a scientologist.

Out of curiosity, what do you consider to be examples of such inconsistencies?

There's the issue of sacred cows. It might be easy for someone who thinks they've finally found the one true belief system to start being bothered by the fact skeptics aren't skeptical every single waking moment. Most of us just accept that as an expedient.

It may be worth taking this into another thread, but I wouldn't call human fallibility a flaw in skepticism because it doesn't follow from any skepticial principle.

I'm not talking about skepticism as a process but skepticism as a community. My contention is Beahan gets involved in one community of thinkers and then flees when he discovers the community can't take the process to its ultimate conclusion and finds another community he thinks lives the process to its ultimate conclusion and then discovers there's hypocrisy and moves to another...

Purely my opinion, of course.

Can you be more explicit about what this is based on? I have been listening to Reasonable Doubts for a couple years, and this doesn't resonate.

Sorry I said Beahan but I was talking about his guest Bannister. That was my 5 minute pop psychology take based on his self-described path to atheism/skepticism. We might think of it as the final evolution in thinking but I would not be surprised if 2 years from now Bannister was on to something else.

Ah, that makes more sense now - how you were describing Beahan was confusing to me.

I don't know enough about Bannister to comment on his flip-floppiness. I don't actually remember the interview, either. I'm not entirely sure I listened to it, but I have a very poor memory for things.

I don't usually listen to their extras but I did here and I have to agree, he sounded like the classic guy who leaves his mind so open that his brains fall out from time to time. I expect that in a/couple years he'll have found a new toy.

That's kind of what I was thinking about him as well.
