Prometheus (Alien Prequel)
D'oh!:
Chestburster, yes. You don't like it? I still think it looks great. I prefer practical effects over CG any day of the week. I hope Ridley Scott does as much of them as he can.
Caffiene:
I like the scene, but I consider the effects of the chestburster are pretty laughable.
When it rises up and looks around the room, the movement looks quite obvious that its not natural... it reminds me of sock puppet, honestly. It seems to have one joint for the neck, one joint at the jaw, and the rest rigid casting and they just swivel it left and right like a Punch&Judy doll to have it look around. And then it skitters off across the table, tail wobbling behind it, very clearly (to me) looking like a rubber snake being pulled along on a length of fishing line (Im not saying you can see the line itself, its just obviously a piece of wobbly rubber/latex being dragged along rather than a creature that is propelling itself).
Theres also one particular blood spurt that reminds me of the Black Knight scene from the Holy Grail. But I wont count that because a) most of the other blood effects are pretty good, and b) Im led to believe that spurts like that may not be as unrealistic under some circumstances as the layperson might assume.
The effects for Mother are also immersion breakingly amusing and dont play very well these days. Its certainly understandable given when it was made, of course. I dont hold that against it.

All this is true. It was still one of the most shocking scenes in film history, which is what really matters. The setup and the reaction by the actors to it makes it one of the best special effects of all time.
Vincegamer:
My understanding is the actors (besides Hurt) weren't told what was coming so the reaction is real.

Yep. I saw that on some making of doc. That is the biggest problem with CGI, the human reactions are never close to real.
